  • Patent number: 12007854
Abstract: A “backup services container” comprises “backup toolkits,” which include scripts for accessing containerized applications plus enabling utilities/environments for executing the scripts. The backup services container is added to Kubernetes pods comprising containerized applications without changing other pod containers. For maximum value and advantage, the backup services container is “over-equipped” with toolkits. The backup services container selects and applies a suitable backup toolkit to a containerized application to ready it for a pending backup. Interoperability with a proprietary data storage management system provides features that are not possible with third-party backup systems. Some embodiments include one or more components of the proprietary data storage management within the illustrative backup services container. Some embodiments include one or more components of the proprietary data storage management system in a backup services pod configured in a Kubernetes node.

  • Publication number: 20240160535
Abstract: An illustrative approach accelerates file indexing operations for block-level backup copies in a data storage management system. A cache storage area is maintained for locally storing and serving key data blocks, thus relying less on retrieving data on demand from the backup copy. File indexing operations are used for populating the cache storage area for speedier retrieval during subsequent live browsing of the same backup copy, and vice versa. The key data blocks cached while file indexing and/or live browsing an earlier backup copy help to pre-fetch corresponding data blocks of later backup copies, thus producing a beneficial learning cycle. The approach is especially beneficial for cloud and tape backup media, and is available for a variety of data sources and backup copies, including block-level backup copies of virtual machines (VMs) and block-level backup copies of file systems, including UNIX-based and Windows-based operating systems and corresponding file systems.

  • Patent number: 11947990
Abstract: Illustrative systems and methods enable a virtual machine (“VM”) to be powered up at any hypervisor regardless of hypervisor type, based on live-mounting VM data that was originally backed up into a hypervisor-independent format by a block-level backup operation. Afterwards, the backed up VM executes anywhere anytime without needing to find a hypervisor that is the same as or compatible with the original source VM's hypervisor. The backed up VM payload data is rendered portable to any virtualized platform. Thus, a VM can be powered up at one or more test stations, data center or cloud recovery environments, and/or backup appliances, without the prior-art limitations of finding a same/compatible hypervisor for accessing and using backed up VM data. An illustrative media agent maintains cache storage that acts as a way station for data blocks retrieved from an original backup copy, and stores data blocks written by the live-mounted VM.

  • Publication number: 20240103902
Abstract: The methods and systems described herein provide a solution that allows the necessary drivers to be automatically injected into a restored or migrated virtual machine. In one solution, using an access node installed in the destination virtual cloud environment, the required drivers are injected into a restored operating system volume/disk after the source VM has been restored/migrated to the new environment. In another solution, a customized machine image is created comprising of tools necessary to determine and install necessary drivers during migrations. This machine image is then used to create an intermediary virtual machine that determines and injects the necessary drivers needed for the source VM to properly function with the destination hypervisor.

  • Publication number: 20240086301
Abstract: A method and system for communicating with IoT devices to gather information related to device failure or error(s) is disclosed. The system makes a copy of at least a portion of the device's non-volatile memory and/or receives IoT device data (e.g., sensor data and/or log files etc.) from an IoT device that recently failed. The system determines which log files and/or sensor data, for example, the IoT device created before and/or after a failure. After gathering this information, the system stores the information in a database, sends it to the IoT device manufacturer, for further analysis and diagnostics to troubleshoot the failure and send a fix or software update to the IoT device.

  • Patent number: 11924034
Abstract: Software, firmware, and systems are described herein that migrate functionality of a source physical computing device to a destination physical computing device. A non-production copy of data associated with a source physical computing device is created. A configuration of the source physical computing device is determined. A configuration for a destination physical computing device is determined based at least in part on the configuration of the source physical computing device. The destination physical computing device is provided access to data and metadata associated with the source physical computing device using the non-production copy of data associated with the source physical computing device.

  • Patent number: 11921675
Abstract: An illustrative pseudo-file-system driver uses deduplication functionality and resources in a storage management system to provide an application and/or a virtual machine with access to a locally-stored file system. From the perspective of the application/virtual machine, the file system appears to be of virtually unlimited capacity. The pseudo-file-system driver instantiates the file system in primary storage, e.g., configured on a local disk. The application/virtual machine requires no configured settings or limits for the file system's storage capacity and may thus treat the file system as “infinite.” The pseudo-file-system driver intercepts write requests and may use the deduplication infrastructure in the storage management system to offload excess data from local primary storage to deduplicated secondary storage, based on a deduplication database.

  • Publication number: 20240012717
Abstract: Protecting configuration data in a clustered container system may include, in some embodiments, protecting an ETCD data store in a Kubernetes cluster. A data storage management system addresses the unique needs of protecting an ETCD data store of a target Kubernetes cluster, as well as protecting non-ETCD data payloads. The illustrative data storage management system defines ETCD as a unique kind of workload. ETCD protection is integrated within the data storage management system, which automatically creates data structures and resources within the system for, and provides special-purpose features to protect, ETCD contents and associated security certificates. One of the special-purpose features deploys a temporary data transfer agent within the target Kubernetes cluster to safeguard an ETCD snapshot and transmit its contents, along with the security certificates, to a backup infrastructure that operates outside of the target Kubernetes cluster.

  • Patent number: 11836156
Abstract: A system according to certain aspects improves the process of performing snapshot replication operations (e.g., maintaining a mirror copy of primary data at a secondary location by generating snapshots of the primary data). The system can collect and maintain cumulative block-level changes to the primary data after each sub-interval of a plurality of sub-intervals between the snapshots. When a snapshot is generated, any changes to the primary data not reflected in the cumulative block-level changes are identified based on the snapshot and transmitted to the secondary location along with the cumulative block-level changes. By the time the snapshot is generated, some or all of the changes to the primary data associated with the given snapshot have already been included in the cumulative block-level changes, thereby reducing the time and computing resources spent to identify and collect the changes for transmission to the secondary location.

  • Patent number: 11709615
Abstract: Certain embodiments described herein relate to an improved block-level replication system. One or more components in an information management system may receive a request to perform a block-level replication between a source storage device and a destination storage device, and depending on the specific replication mode requested, (i) store block-level changes directly to the destination storage device or (ii) first to a recovery point store and then later to the destination storage device.

  • Publication number: 20230124827
Abstract: The disclosed “Live Mount In Cloud” solution enables, within a cloud computing environment that houses a desired backup copy made from a source virtual machine, immediate access to backed up data on demand without restoring the backup copy in its entirety. Live Mount In Cloud also enables the live-mounted VM to write new data, not just to read from the backup copy. Live Mount In Cloud creates multiply nested VMs within the cloud computing environment. Accordingly, the live-mounted VM runs in (is hosted by) a hypervisor nested within a cloud-native VM. Live Mount In Cloud handles any differences between formatting and configuration settings of the hypervisor hosting the live-mounted VM and the way in which the backup copy is formatted. A backup proxy VM intercepts reads and writes issued by the live-mounted VM and facilitates access to the backup copy.
