    Abstract: A cathode ray tube provides a two-dimensional sequential scan pattern on which dots for scanning or printing are presented as spots of light provided in sequence. A single multi-scan linear raster sweep of the cathode ray tube electron beam produces a single line of dots on the scanned image or photosensitive medium. A fiber optics array with one end facing the cathode ray tube, is configured two-dimensionally in a pattern that corresponds to the sequential sweep pattern of the cathode ray tube. The trace of dots on the cathode ray tube has sufficient length to accommodate the number of dots required for the width of the finished product or scanned image. A lens positioned between the cathode ray tube and optical fiber array, focuses the cathode ray tube image onto the fiber ends with a reduction in size. At the other end of the fiber optics array, the fibers are abutted together linearly to form the desired final output line width with coherence of the fibers from input to output.

    Abstract: An apparatus is provided for scanning a photographic film or the like with a laser beam. The apparatus includes a roll source or cassette of film to be supplied and used and a take-up cassette to receive the exposed film in the form of a roll. Between the source of the film and the take-up cassette there is provided an arrangement consisting of one or two knurled segments or rollers which peripherally engage the film along the lateral edges thereof in order to transport the film past a laser beam generator and scanner adjacent which the knurled roller or rollers are positioned in order to draw the film at a closely controlled rate past a slot through which the laser beam exits in order to photographically process the film. Between the knurled roller or rollers and the take-up cassette are provided exit rollers which engage the film at a slightly faster speed than the speed at which the film is travelling. The exit rollers are arranged to engage the film with a force of about 21/2-4 pounds.

    Abstract: A high resolution laser printer utilizes a first cylindrical lens to focus a laser beam in the sagittal direction prior to the facets of a rotating polygon. The light reflected from the polygon is focused in the horizontal direction at the photoconductor drum of an electrophotographic process by a scan lens assembly. Following the scan lens assembly, there is a second cylindrical lens which also focuses the laser beam in the horizontal direction at the photoconductor. The first and second cylindrical lenses are positioned to eliminate errors in the facets of the polygon. Scan velocity deviations resulting from the optical design are corrected by storing correction information in a memory and using this information to vary the rate at which the laser is modulated with data.

    Abstract: A dual mode laser printer utilizes a program-controlled microprocessor to switch between a high resolution, slow speed mode and a low resolution, high speed mode. In the printer a laser beam is modulated at a rate which is a first division of a system clock rate. This beam is caused to focus on a recording medium and, due to a rotating multi-faceted polygon, the beam sweeps across the medium. The medium is moved according to a second division of the system clock. By means of the microprocessor, the printer can be in either: (1) the high resolution mode in which the laser beam is modulated at a high rate due to the first divided signal and the medium moves at a slow rate due to the second divided signal, or (2) the low resolution mode in which the light beam is modulated at a lower rate due to the first divided signal and the medium moves at a faster rate due to the second divided signal.

    Abstract: A batch reading system for automatically reading documents such as tags or tickets having data marked thereon in the form of human readable characters which are also automatically readable by suitable apparatus, the system being capable of feeding documents which are curled, wrinkled, bent, and otherwise deformed or mutilated. The documents are fed from an input hopper by first feed means, which may be a vacuum belt, from which they are fed to a second vacuum belt on whose underside the tags are held and fed past an underlying automatic reading device. The documents which are properly read are each stripped from the overlying vacuum belt by a flipper arm into a discharge chute, while other tickets are fed past the discharge chute to a reject stacker. To accurately laterally position the documents being fed, one of their longitudinal edges is pressed against a reference surface.
