  • Patent number: 5023284
Abstract: This invention is directed to a stabilizer useful to retard transesterification in moldable polymer blends containing polyester(s) during processing of the blends at elevated temperatures, particularly at high temperatures above about 285.degree. C. More particularly, the stabilizer comprises a phosphate-epoxy adduct. The stabilizer may optionally further comprise a reactive functionality component comprising a compound having a imide or oxazoline functionality and/or a hindered phenol component. The invention is also directed to a composition comprising the stabilizer and a particularly defined polymer blend.

  • Patent number: 4081338
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to a method of breaking an oil-in-water emulsion. Briefly, the method includes the steps of adjusting the pH of the oil-in-water emulsion to a pH in the range of 6 to 10. At least one part per million of a cation selected from Fe+2, Fe+3, Al+3, Cu+1 and Cu+2 is added to the oil-in-water emulsion. Thereafter, the oil-in-water emulsion is treated with a dissolvable iron electrode, the electrode being dissolvable by transmitting an electric current thereto. Sufficient electric current is transmitted through the electrode to develop a ferrous ion/oil weight ratio of at least 0.02. After treatment by the dissolvable electrode, the oil-in-water emulsion is held until the emulsion breaks.

  • Patent number: 4028327
Abstract: A process for producing powder paint particles, particularly metal-flake containing powder paint particles, which comprises contacting the exposed surface of an aqueous saline solution in continuous movement through a spreading and extraction zone into a collection zone with a liquid dispersion of said organic paint binder, said metal flakes and an organic solvent miscible with said saline solution wherein said liquid dispersion floats on said surface for a time sufficient to admit of its spreading on said surface extraction of organic solvent from the floating liquid paint dispersion into said saline solution, and solidification of said paint binder on said surface into plate-like solids containing metal flakes with said spreading and extraction zone, and movement of said saline solution and floating plate-like solids into said collection zone wherein said plate-like solids are broken into smaller particles and recovered.

  • Patent number: 4028326
Abstract: A process for producing powder paint particles, particularly metal-flakes containing powder paint particles, which comprises contacting the exposed surface of a stream of water in continuous movement through a spreading and extraction zone into a collection zone with a liquid dispersion of an organic paint binder and metal flakes in an organic solvent miscible with water wherein the organic paint binder is essentially insoluble in water and floats on the surface for a time sufficient to admit of its spreading on such surface, extraction of organic solvent from the floating liquid paint dispersion into the water, and solidification of the paint binder on such surface into plate-like solids containing said metal flakes within said spreading and extraction zone, and movement of the saline solution and floating plate-like solids into said collection zone wherein the plate-like solids are broken into smaller particles and recovered.

  • Patent number: 3940453
Abstract: A method of preparing a homogeneous thermosetting powder paint composition which cures to form a coating exhibiting outstanding exterior durability, adhesion and impact strength. The method comprises: introducing a liquid including at least a crosslinkable copolymer and an inert solvent into a devolatilizing zone wherein the inert solvent is removed and the nonvolatile material is separated in a molten state; feeding said nonvolatile molten material under pressure into a heated mixing zone comprising a static mixer; simultaneously feeding a stoichiometric quantity (.+-. 30%) of a molten crosslinking agent for said copolymer into said mixing zone under pressure; removing the mixture of nonvolatile molten material and molten crosslinking agent from said mixing zone; cooling said mixture to form a solid material; and purlverizing the solid material to form a powder.
