Patent number: 10457138Abstract: A self-sealing liquid bladder having a plurality of layers including a liquid impermeable material layer that is compatible with a liquid held in the bladder and at least one sealing layer that is conformally arranged to span a surface area of the liquid impermeable material layer and that is separated from a liquid held in the bladder by the liquid impermeable layer, the sealing layer including a sealing means that, in response to a penetration of both the liquid impermeable material layer and the sealing layer, substantially seals the penetration.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2015Date of Patent: October 29, 2019Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Mark S. Wilenski, Michael P. Kozar, Amy E. Bahe

Patent number: 10293519Abstract: A mandrel bladder end fitting includes a compression housing defining a circumferential interior wall; the interior wall constitutes a first clamping surface. An expansion assembly, axially received within the interior wall, includes a plurality of wedges that collectively define a second clamping surface. The expansion assembly also includes a central core and a threaded member received within a threaded aperture of the central core. A radially extending flat washer, seated within the interior wall, prevents axial movement of the expansion wedges in one direction. Thus, upon rotation of the threaded member, the central core will move axially toward the washer, forcing the second clamping surface to move only radially outwardly toward the first clamping surface. As such, because the flat washer restricts axial movement of the expansion wedges, relative motion between first and second clamping surfaces; i.e., between the collective wedges and interior wall, is limited to radial movement, only.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2015Date of Patent: May 21, 2019Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: William H. Ingram, Jr., Jesse M. Havens, Megan E. Bliss, Amy E. Bahe, Craig A. Cramer

Patent number: 9950613Abstract: A self-sealing bladder including a liquid impermeable material layer that is compatible with a liquid held in the bladder and a plurality of flexible sealing flaps extending inwardly from the interior surface of the liquid bladder wherein, in response to a hole formed in the bladder that establishes an unwanted flow of liquid from the bladder, at least one sealing flap responds to the unwanted flow of fluid by bending towards and at least partially covering the hole.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2015Date of Patent: April 24, 2018Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Michael P. Kozar, Mark S. Wilenski, Amy E. Bahe
