  • Publication number: 20240133264
Abstract: A cementing system includes an inner string configured to be received into a casing string in a wellbore. The cementing system also includes a stinger coupled to the inner string and configured to be received into a float shoe connected to the casing string. The cementing system also includes a first retractable joint coupled to the inner string. The retractable joint is configured to reduce in axial length so as to permit at least part of stinger to be withdrawn from engagement with the float shoe while a weight of the inner string is supported by a hanger running tool and casing hanger connected to the casing. The inner string, the stinger, and the retractable joint form at least a part of a flowpath that extends through an end of the casing string at the float shoe.

  • Patent number: 8967245
Abstract: A method and assembly for reducing a radial gap between radially proximate components including a setting member having a first dimension that partially defines the radial gap, the setting member including a circumferential groove extending radially from the first dimension, and a first toroid having a second dimension, the setting member operatively arranged to engage with the first toroid, wherein increasingly engaging the setting member with the first toroid enables a boundary dimension of the assembly to be extended toward the radial gap for reducing the radial gap, the circumferential groove operatively arranged to catch the first toroid when the setting member is fully engaged with the first toroid.

  • Patent number: 8881798
Abstract: A subterranean tool that is self contained for actuation can be run into a desired location on an automatic set mode controlled by a timer. If a problem develops in getting the tool to the desired location in time a magnetic field created by permanent or electro-magnets can be brought to bear on the tool to stop the timer before the tool actuates. Once the tool is subsequently positioned at the desired location another magnetic field can be brought to bear near the tool to set it. Alternatively, the tool can be run to the desired location without activation with the timer and then the magnetic field can be brought to the tool to set it. The magnetic field can be lowered to the tool with wireline or can be dropped or pumped past the tool to actuate the tool. Optionally the field can be generated from within an object that ultimately lands on a seat to provide a backup way to set the tool using tubing pressure.

  • Patent number: 8448713
Abstract: An inflatable packer contains a reactive metal in an annular space between the mandrel and the element. A fluid is admitted into the annular space to start a reaction that gives off gas. The generated gas fills the annular space and inflates the element in the process. The actuating fluid can be water and the off gas can be hydrogen. The volume of the reactants can also increase as they swell in the reaction that generates the gas. A valve arrangement associated with the mandrel retains the gas pressure and prevents over-pressurization. The packer can be set in a surrounding tubular or in open hole.

  • Patent number: 7857045
Abstract: A torque transfer arrangement includes a relatively immobile construct; a relatively mobile construct. The relatively mobile construct is radially adjacent the relatively immobile construct. One or more torque body assemblies are mounted to the relatively mobile construct. The assemblies are radially responsive to applied hydraulic pressure to contact a surface of a separate structure and transmit torque from the arrangement to the separate structure. A method is included.

  • Publication number: 20100307770
Abstract: A junction selective contaminant exclusion tool includes a tubular positionable within the junction and having an opening through a wall thereof, a material disposed on an outside surface of the tubular, the material being capable of increasing a radial dimension between a surface of the material in contact with the tubular and an opposite surface of the material upon exposure to a selected species. A method for excluding selected contaminants from a wellbore junction is also disclosed. The method includes: disposing a junction at a wellbore casing window; disposing a tubular member having at least one opening through a wall thereof at the junction, the tubular member including an exclusion material thereon capable of existing in a first configuration and a second configuration, the second configuration obtainable upon exposure to a selected species; and exposing the material to the selected species.

  • Patent number: 7478678
Abstract: A setting mechanism is made to respond to hydrostatic pressure. Upon reaching a predetermined depth corresponding to a given pressure, a pilot piston is shifted to allow well fluids to bypass a first set of piston seals and reach a second set. A shear pin that held the pilot piston in position is broken as the hydrostatic pressure increases with greater depth attained. However, the shifting of the pilot piston does not cause the main piston in the assembly to set the downhole tool. The action of the well fluids on the secondary seal set on the pilot piston eventually fail the second seal set allowing hydrostatic pressure to bypass them and actuate the main piston that will set the downhole tool. Raising the tool from the wellbore allows the spring acting on the pilot piston to seal in a bore to isolate hydrostatic pressure from the operating piston.
