  • Publication number: 20050149649
Abstract: A communication system comprising three communication resources: a contention-type access block, a non-contention access block and a second non-contention access block called a reserved block. Each time that a remote unit has a block of data to transfer to a hub station, it sends the block of data over the contention-type access block. It also sends a corresponding notification message over the reserved block. If the hub station receives the notification message but not the block of data, it sends a response message to the remote unit which designates a resource within the non-contention access block. The remote unit then sends the block of data to the hub station over the designated resource.

  • Publication number: 20050145954
Abstract: A method and device providing a strained Si film with reduced defects is provided, where the strained Si film forms a fin vertically oriented on a surface of a non-conductive substrate. The strained Si film or fin may form a semiconductor channel having relatively small dimensions while also having few defects. The strained Si fin is formed by growing Si on the side of a relaxed SiGe block. A dielectric gate, such as, for example, an oxide, a high “k” material, or a combination of the two, may be formed on a surface of the strained Si film. Additionally, without substantially affecting the stress in the strained Si film, the relaxed SiGe block may be removed to allow a second gate oxide to be formed on the surface previously occupied by the relaxed SiGe block.

  • Publication number: 20050146811
Abstract: A method for preventing electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage in the head-suspension assembly (HSA) construction process. The method teaches the formation of a novel GMR magnetic recording head on a conductive slider substrate, the GMR head being electrically connected to the substrate and its conducting leads having balanced resistances between the leads and the substrate. By establishing an electrical connection between the GMR head and the slider substrate, the entire HSA can be grounded during its construction. By also grounding any nearby conducting elements that could inadvertently contact the HSA or its parts, no accumulated tribocharges can discharge through the sensitive GMR sensor element.

Abstract: Methods of and systems for illuminating objects using planar laser illumination beams having substantially-planar spatial distribution characteristics that extend through the field of view (FOV) of image formation and detection modules employed in such systems. Each planar laser illumination beam is produced from a planar laser illumination beam array (PLIA) comprising an plurality of planar laser illumination modules (PLIMs). Each PLIM comprises a visible laser diode (VLD, a focusing lens, and a cylindrical optical element arranged therewith. The individual planar laser illumination beam components produced from each PLIM are optically combined to produce a composite substantially planar laser illumination beam having substantially uniform power density characteristics over the entire spatial extend thereof and thus the working range of the system.

  • Patent number: 6915481
Abstract: Transactional watermarking is disclosed. In one embodiment, a computer-implemented method includes receiving an original multimedia content source. The original multimedia content source may have already had a watermark added thereto. The method watermarks at least a portion of the source at least two times, each time with a different watermark to generate a different watermarked version of the original multimedia content source. A final watermarked content source is then generated by utilizing the different watermarked versions of the content source. One particular version of the watermarked content source may be selected as the final watermarked content source; at least a portion of at least two of the different watermarked versions of the watermarked content source may be combined to generate the final watermarked content source; etc.

  • Publication number: 20050143339
Abstract: Methods for increasing the elimination half-life of key metabolites such as d4T by administering an aryl phosphate derivative of d4T having an electron withdrawing substituent on the aryl group and an amino acid substituent on the phosphate group are described. A preferred aryl phosphate derivative of d4T is HI-113 (d4T-5?-[p-bromophenyl methoxyalaninyl phosphate]). The administration of HI-113 results in more prolonged systemic exposure to the key metabolites, Ala-d4T-MP and d4T, than administration of an equimolar dose of either metabolite. Each metabolite has a significantly longer elimination half life when formed in vivo from the administration of HI-113 than when the metabolite is administered directly.

  • Publication number: 20050141304
Abstract: A redundancy scheme for a memory is disclosed that is programmable both before and after the memory device is packaged and/or installed in a system. This is preferably accomplished by using programmable non-volatile memory elements to control the replacement circuitry. Because the programmable memory elements are non-volatile, the desired replacement configuration is not lost during shipping, or if power is lost in a system. By allowing post-packaging replacement of defective memory elements, the overall yield of the device may be improved. By allowing post system installation replacement of defective memory elements, the reliability of many systems may be improved. In addition, the disclosed redundancy scheme allows two or more defective memory elements from different rows or columns to be replaced with memory elements from a single redundant low or column. This provides added flexibility during the replacement process.

  • Publication number: 20050139337
Abstract: The present invention is a rapid method of determining the concentration of the major components in a chemical stream. The present invention is also a simple, low cost, device of determining the in-situ concentration of the major components in a chemical stream. In particular, the present invention provides a useful method for simultaneously determining the concentrations of sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide and sodium carbonate in aqueous kraft pulping liquors through use of an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) tunnel flow cell or optical probe capable of producing a ultraviolet absorbency spectrum over a wavelength of 190 to 300 nm. In addition, the present invention eliminates the need for manual sampling and dilution previously required to generate analyzable samples.
