  • Publication number: 20080004364
Abstract: A metal nanoparticle supported on or dispersed in a polymer is irradiated with photons from a laser source to address the nanoparticles. The polymer is transmissive to the photons and addressed nanoparticles transform the energy of the photon to heat which is transferred to a material in the vicinity of the nanoparticle. The locally heated material undergoes a physical or chemical transformation upon heating. The transformed material can be a material in the proximity of the metal nanoparticle supported polymer or metal nanoparticle/polymer composite. In this manner thermally induced physical or chemical transformations can be carried out in very small volumes of material without significant heating to the bulk of the material.

  • Publication number: 20070296958
Abstract: A polarization imaging apparatus measures the Stokes image of a sample. The apparatus consists of an optical lens set 11, a linear polarizer 14 with its optical axis 18, a first variable phase retarder 12 with its optical axis 16 aligned 22.5° to axis 18, a second variable phase retarder 13 with its optical axis 17 aligned 45° to axis 18, a imaging sensor 15 for sensing the intensity images of the sample, a controller 101 and a computer 102. Two variable phase retarders 12 and 13 were controlled independently by a computer 102 through a controller unit 101 which generates a sequential of voltages to control the phase retardations of VPRs 12 and 13. A set of four intensity images, I0, I1, I2 and I3 of the sample were captured by imaging sensor 15 when the phase retardations of VPRs 12 and 13 were set at (0,0), (?,0), (?,?) and (?/2,?), respectively Then four Stokes components of a Stokes image, S0, S1, S2 and S3 were calculated using the four intensity images.

  • Publication number: 20070286106
Abstract: A method is provided for sending messages to a plurality of access terminals in a wireless network. The method comprises broadcasting a multicast message along with a predetermined address associated with the plurality of access terminals. The multicast message and the address associated with a plurality of access terminals is received at an access terminal. The access terminal compares the received address with a locally stored address, and the message is accepted in response to the received and locally stored addresses being the same. If the received and locally stored addresses are different, then the multicast message is discarded.
