  • Publication number: 20230383669
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to seal assemblies for a turbomachine. The seal assemblies include stationary and rotating components and at least one interface between the stationary and rotating components. In some examples, seal assembly includes an oleophilic coating disposed between the stationary and rotating components. The seal assembly may include a surface texture to enhance the oleophilicity of the surface coating disposed between the stationary and rotating components. In other examples, the seal assembly includes an oleophobic coating disposed between the stationary and rotating components. The seal assembly may include a surface texture to enhance the oleophobicity of the surface coating. During operation, the oleophilic seal assembly features retain lubricant between the stationary and rotating components and the oleophobic seal assembly features inhibit the escape of lubricant from the contact regions between the stationary and rotating components.

  • Publication number: 20230383666
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to seal assemblies for a turbomachine. The seal assemblies include stationary and rotating components and at least one interface between the stationary and rotating components. The seal assembly further includes a self-lubricating lattice element made of carbon or a carbon-based material. The self-lubricating lattice element may have a porous and compressible microstructure capable of retaining a liquid substance. During engine operation, the self-lubricating lattice element can compress and expel some portion of the liquid substance to form a liquid-containing layer between the rotating and stationary components of the seal assembly. Also described herein are self-lubricating wear sleeves for use in other portions of the turbomachine.

  • Patent number: 10704734
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining lubrication contamination or deterioration in an engine or a lubricant system of an engine can include at least one sensor provided in the lubricant system. The sensor can sense an aroma of a lubricant or the air around the lubricant to measure a chemical composition or an aromatic. The sensed chemical composition or aromatic can be compared to a baseline or threshold to determine a particular contamination type or deterioration level of the lubricant.

  • Patent number: 10274016
Abstract: A bearing assembly for use in a rotating machine includes a housing and a retention nut threadably coupled to the housing and including a first retention mechanism. The bearing assembly also includes a retention bolt coupled to the housing and including a second retention mechanism configured to engage the first retention mechanism to maintain engagement of the retention nut with the housing.
