  • Publication number: 20200317515
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for using a high heat capacity gas as at least a portion of the diluent during the regeneration step of a reverse flow reactor process. Instead of using nitrogen or air as the primary diluent gas, CO2 and/or H2O can be added as diluent gas for the regeneration step in the reaction cycle. Increasing the heat capacity of the diluent gas provides a reduction in the peak temperature within the reactor relative to the amount of fuel combusted during regeneration. This can allow for a reduction in the volume of diluent used during regeneration and/or an increase in the amount of fuel used. Reducing the volume of diluent can reduce the pressure drop during regeneration, which can provide a corresponding reduction in the amount of compression required for recycle of the diluent. Increasing the amount of fuel can allow for a corresponding increase in the amount of endothermic reaction performed during the reaction step.

  • Publication number: 20200318142
Abstract: This invention relates to methods and apparatus for harvesting by-product oxygen from algae ponds or bioreactors (collectively, “algal biofuel production”) for use in an oxygen-requiring process that requires oxygen as a reactant such as syngas, hydrogen, or power production processes, which optionally can be integrated with the algal biofuel production. In some embodiments, the invention provides methods that include a method comprising: collecting oxygen from an algal biofuel production process; and using the collected oxygen in an oxygen-requiring process that requires oxygen as a reactant. In some embodiments, the invention provides systems that include an integrated system comprising: an algal bioreactor that produces biodiesel and oxygen, a pipeline for transporting oxygen to an oxygen-requiring process unit so that the oxygen can be used as reactant in the oxygen-requiring process unit, and the oxygen-requiring process unit.

  • Patent number: 10577243
Abstract: A reforming catalyst with improved surface area is provided by using high surface area alumina doped with a stabilizer metal as a catalyst support. The surface area of the catalyst can be higher than a typical reforming catalyst, and the surface area can also be maintained under high temperature operation. This can allow use of the catalyst for reforming in a higher temperature environment while maintaining a higher surface area, which can allow for improved dispersion and/or activity of an active metal such as rhodium on the catalyst support. The catalyst can be suitable for production of syngas from natural gas or other hydrocarbon-containing feeds.

  • Publication number: 20200030779
Abstract: Ceramic compositions with catalytic activity are provided, along with methods for using such catalytic ceramic compositions. The ceramic compositions correspond to compositions that can acquire increased catalytic activity by cyclic exposure of the ceramic composition to reducing and oxidizing environments at a sufficiently elevated temperature. The ceramic compositions can be beneficial for use as catalysts in reaction environments involving swings of temperature and/or pressure conditions, such as a reverse flow reaction environment. Based on cyclic exposure to oxidizing and reducing conditions, the surface of the ceramic composition can be converted from a substantially fully oxidized state to various states including at least some dopant metal particles supported on a structural oxide surface.

  • Patent number: 10208260
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for catalytically dewaxing a diesel boiling range feed. In some aspects, catalytic dewaxing can be performed at low hydrogen treat gas rates and/or low hydrogen purity conditions. In other aspects, the systems and methods can allow for distillate dewaxing while reducing or minimizing the amount of equipment required.

  • Patent number: 8076524
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preparing olefin comonomers from ethylene. The comonomer generated can be used in a subsequent process, such as a polyethylene polymerization reactor. The comonomer generated can be transported, optionally without isolation or storage, to a polyethylene polymerization reactor. One method includes the steps of: feeding ethylene and a catalyst in a solvent/diluent to one or more comonomer synthesis reactors; reacting the ethylene and the catalyst under reaction conditions sufficient to produce an effluent comprising a desired comonomer; forming a gas stream comprising unreacted ethylene, and a liquid/bottoms stream comprising the comonomer, optionally by passing the effluent to one or more downstream gas/liquid phase separators; and purifying at least a portion of said liquid/bottoms stream by removing at least one of solid polymer, catalyst, and undesirable olefins therefrom.

  • Patent number: 8003839
Abstract: The present invention relates to an in-line method for generating comonomer, from monomer, such as ethylene. The comonomer generated is stored prior to transporting to a polyethylene polymerization reactor. The in-line method includes the steps of providing an in-line comonomer synthesis reactor and a downstream gas/liquid phase separator prior to the polymerization reactor; feeding ethylene monomer and a catalyst in a solvent and/or diluent to the comonomer synthesis reactor; reacting the ethylene monomer and the catalyst in solvent and/or diluent under reaction conditions to produce an effluent stream including ethylene monomer and comonomer; passing the effluent stream from the comonomer synthesis reactor to the downstream gas/liquid phase separator to separate a gas stream from a bottom stream, wherein the gas stream is a mixture of ethylene monomer and comonomer; and passing the gas stream to the polymerization reactor to provide the necessary comonomer input.
