Abstract: A method and system for topology discovery in an ad hoc network is useful for reducing unnecessary network signaling messages and improving network efficiency. The method includes receiving, at a first node, a first topology discovery signal transmitted from a second node (step 405). A response shedding rule is then applied to the first node (step 415). Based on the response shedding rule, it is then determined that the first node is eligible to respond to the first topology discovery signal (step 420). In response to the first topology discovery signal, a second topology discovery signal is then transmitted from the first node to the second node (step 425).
