A database of pre-recorded sounds is searched to identify at least one pre-recorded sound that has spectral characteristics corresponding to the spectral characteristics of the sound in the ambient environment. At least a portion of the identified at least one pre-recorded sound is reproduced to mask the sound in the ambient environment.
