  • Patent number: 9381217
Abstract: Methods of encapsulating cargo in a microgel droplet, microgel droplets prepared according the provided methods, and methods of use thereof are disclosed. The methods of preparing cargo-encapsulated microgels generally include flowing through a flow-focusing nozzle of a microfluidic device a macromer phase, an oil phase, and a crosslinker phase to form microgel droplets by oil-water emulsion. The phases are pumped, injected, or flowed through the microfluidic device such that as the macromer phase approaches the flow focusing nozzle, the co-flowing oil phase shields the macromer from contact with the crosslinker phase until flow instability occurs and macromer phase droplets form. After flow instability occurs, the crosslinker diffuses from the crosslinker phase into the droplets in an effective amount to covalently crosslink the macromer into a microgel network encapsulating the cargo in the crosslinked macromer.

  • Publication number: 20150360808
Abstract: The invention relates to a self-assembly formed by a series of longitudinal members and cross members, all of the longitudinal members being identical to one other and all of the cross members being identical to one other, such that only two types of parts are required to construct the structure. Owing to the shape of the parts, they can be assembled to one another to create a solid structure without requiring any other connecting materials or elements. The longitudinal members comprise a series of slots into which narrowed segments of the cross members are inserted. Once the cross members have been inserted into the slots they are trapped therein by moving the longitudinal members and, in order to prevent this movement occurring in the opposite direction, other cross members are inserted into slots provided in the longitudinal members for this purpose.

  • Publication number: 20150267518
Abstract: An isolation method is described for gravel packed zones separated by at least one packer and having an auxiliary conduit passing through the packer into adjacent zones. The conduit includes at least one each of a shunt tube, flow housing, annular space, and isolation valve housing. The flow housing, the annular space, and the isolation valve housing are all annular and formed between two concentric pipes. The method includes running in an assembly of screens isolated by at least one packer with at least one auxiliary conduit extending into adjacent zones defined by the packer when the packer is subsequently set. The method also includes closing flow in said conduit to prevent flow into shunt tubes during production based on creating a flow barrier in the annular space, the flow housing, or the isolation valve housing, the shunt tubes supplying slurry through the auxiliary conduit prior to the production.

Abstract: Auxiliary conduits that run through a packer body or seal are equipped with thermally responsive valve members that with a time exposure close off the conduits to create zonal isolation across one or more packers after a gravel pack. The heat source can also be added to the well fluids to control the speed of the process either in the form of heaters or reactive chemicals that create an exothermic reaction. The valve material can be shape memory polymer.

  • Patent number: 8956700
Abstract: A method for adhering a coating to a substrate structure comprises selecting a substrate structure having an outer surface oriented substantially parallel to a direction of radial stress, modifying the outer surface to provide a textured region having steps to adhere a coating thereto, and applying a coating to extend over at least a portion of the textured region, wherein the steps are oriented substantially perpendicular to the direction of radial stress to resist deformation of the coating relative to the substrate structure. A rotating component comprises a substrate structure having an outer surface oriented substantially parallel to a direction of radial stress. The outer surface defines a textured region having steps to adhere a coating thereto, and a coating extends over at least a portion of the textured region. The steps are oriented substantially perpendicular to the direction of radial stress to resist creep.

  • Patent number: 8895353
Abstract: Counter anions having oxidative properties alter the performance of solution processed multilayer polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) that use cationic conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) as electron injection layers (EILs). In some versions, PLEDs with poly(2-methoxy-5-(2?-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) emissive layers and cationic CPE EILs are altered with halide counter anions to exhibit a systematic increase in device performance. Exemplary oxidative counter anions are halide counter anions with F?>Cl?>Br?>I? in terms of device performance.
