  • Patent number: 4974660
Abstract: The process and apparatus according to the invention relates to the continuous casting of hollow bodies of metals such as aluminium, copper, steels of all types, or other metals or alloys. The process comprises introducing a liquid metal into an annular space between an outer mold and an inner mandrel, the liquid metal being subjected in the vicinity of the mandrel to the action of a movable magnetic field which entrains it in an upward direction. The magnetic field is preferably generated by a magnetic rotor which is disposed in the mandrel. The process is used in particular for producing blanks intended for the production of non-welded pipes and tubes.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 1, 1989
Date of Patent: December 4, 1990
    Assignee: Vallourec
Inventors: Roland Ernst, Marcel Garnier, Michel Giroutru, Andre Gueussier, Rene Moreau, Pierre Peytavin

  • Patent number: 4617067
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a continuous casting process for the production of semi-finished articles or blanks of hard steels such as bars, wires or tubes having a carbon content higher than 0.75%. In this process, the blank obtained by continuous casting is submitted to a secondary cooling under the mold, cut and within three minutes after cutting, introduced into a reheating furnace in which its temperature is brought to a level slightly lower than the solidus temperature, maintained for a short period, and finally elongated in the hot condition. In a preferred embodiment, the liquid steel is stirred during the continuous casting operation by means of magnetic fields induced in the steel by electromagnetic coils disposed around the blank thereby facilitating dissolution of carbides contained within the liquid steel.

  • Patent number: 4555265
Abstract: The invention concerns the production of steels which have an isotropic structure, are very well adapted to cold forming particularly by pressing and which have a very low silicon content. The method comprises taking a deoxidated liquid steel with a low silicon content and placing in it a cored wire containing a divided material, which is a mixture of silico-calcium and granular calcium in a specific quantity and specific proportions. The method is applicable to non-alloyed or slightly alloyed steels and is particularly suitable for a continuous casting installation.

  • Patent number: 4531972
Abstract: The invention relates to the methods for the preparation of steels with high machinability, comprising globular inclusions which allow for high cutting speeds by means of carbide tools. The method according to the invention consists of introducing into a liquid steel which has been deoxidized carefully with aluminum, and desulfurized, additions of calcium and sulfur, carried out by a cored wire, the contents obtained being from 20 to 100 ppm calcium and 150 to 500 ppm sulfur. The steels prepared under this method offer a particular aptitude for high speed machining with the aid of carbide cutting tools.
