  • Patent number: 8057477
Abstract: A reamer system is provided which includes a cannulated reamer holder, and a corresponding cannulated reamer, which, when assembled and operated over a drill pin secured in a manner axially aligned with the stem of the femoral joint, enables the accurate and controlled reshaping of the femoral joint. The reamer is made up of a cutting form and a central guide, in which the guide is supported at the center of the cutting form by a bar structure. The bar structure includes portions which connect to and extend radially between the central guide and a peripheral edge of the cutting form.

  • Publication number: 20110202061
Abstract: An acetabular reaming system is disclosed of the type having a driver and a tool held together by a quick-release coupling mechanism. The tool (10) has a hollow body (12) defining a domed shape with a rotational axis (14), an apex (16) aligned with the axis (14) and a hemispherical wall (18) extending from the apex (16) to an equatorial rim (20) spaced 90 degrees from the axis (14). The rim (20) has an edge (22) visible to the user that indicates the position of the tool (10) relative to the bone. A first plurality of cutting sites (24) is arrayed along the body (12) and a second plurality of cutting sites (28) is arrayed circumferentially along the edge (22). Preferably, the first plurality of cutting sites (24) present raised first teeth (30, 130, 230, 330) having a profile selected from continuous squared (30), continuous rounded (130), discontinuous squared (230) and tongued (330) profiles.

  • Patent number: 7988692
Abstract: A surgical tool holder 12 and tool system 10 is provided. The surgical tool holder (12) is adapted to connect to a tool support (14) having an interface receiver (36). The tool support provides a mount for a surgical tool head. The tool holder (12) includes a center rod (20), a tool interface (28) and a quick connect mechanism (50). The center rod (20) has a first shank end (24) and a second tool end (26). The tool interface (28) is disposed on the tool end (26) of the center rod (20). The tool interface (28) has at least one transversely extending portion (44, 44a), extending radially outward, beyond the diameter of the center rod (20) at the tool end (26). The interface (28) is adapted to engage with the interface receiver (36). The quick connect mechanism (50) is disposed on the center rod (20) to move in a rotationally-constrained manner thereon proximate the tool interface (28).

  • Patent number: 7976548
Abstract: A surgical tool holder aids a surgeon in controlling the use of a tool during, for example, preparation of a femoral cavity for reception of hip joint prosthesis. The holder has a housing that encloses a mechanism having, at a far end, a tool-engaging interface, and at the opposite end, a handle which facilitates manipulation of the tool during use in preparing a bone site by the surgeon. The holder enables easy orientation of the tool attached to its end, which is important because control of the tool is critical in order to accurately prepare a recess for reception and installation of a prosthesis.

  • Patent number: 7955320
Abstract: A surgical instrument holder (10) is made up of a head assembly (68) and a drive spindle assembly (42). The head assembly (68) has a shank (12) with a first driveable end (14) and second coupling end (16). The second end has a coupling device (20) having an interface (22) for receiving a surgical instrument (24). The instrument (24) is held in functional assembly to the shank by a releasable locking mechanism (26). The releasable locking mechanism (26) is made up of a locking ring (30) slideably disposed about the shank, a spring (32) biased against the coupling device (20) by the locking ring, and a connection ring (34) retaining the locking ring in a fixed position during use. The drive spindle assembly (42) is connected to the head assembly (68) so as to transmit torque therethrough. The spindle assembly (42) has an elongated drive spindle (40), high precision bearings (44, 120, 122) and a cylindrical tube (46).

  • Patent number: 7955323
Abstract: A surgical instrument holder has a head assembly and a drive spindle assembly. The head has a second coupling end with a coupling device and interface for receiving and holding a surgical instrument. The instrument is held by a releasable locking mechanism having a ring slideably biased against the coupling device by a spring, and a connection device retaining the spring in a fixed position during use. The spindle assembly has a drive spindle rotatably housed in a cylindrical tube. The connection device provides a quick-release connection between the head and drive spindle assemblies, such that unlocking the connection device enables quick disassembly of the connection for cleaning and component sterilization. A method of use of the instrument holder allows the surgical instrument to be installed through an incision in a least invasive orientation separate from the holder.

  • Patent number: 7922722
Abstract: An acetabular reamer (10?) for cutting a required cut shape is described. The reamer (10?) has a cutting shell (12?) having a series of doubly curved cutting teeth (16?) thereon of a quantity to substantially reduce a cutting pressure on each tooth as well as to reduce a size of a typical chip generated upon cutting. Substantially all of the teeth have a matched arc cutting edge (20?) of substantial length that has a cutting profile which substantially matches a profile of a shape to be cut. The apertures in which the cutting edges are formed have at least one straight edge (80) by which a punch, used in the process of forming the edge, may be oriented. Such a configuration reduces the number of teeth required to cut the shape.

  • Patent number: 7785329
Abstract: An adjustable reamer spindle is provided to aid a surgeon in controlling an instrument. The reamer spindle is easily disassembled for cleaning. The spindle has a repositionable handle, a locking ring, and an elastic device. The locking ring aids in holding the reamer spindle together. Removal of the locking ring against an elastic bias of a spring unfastens an end of the assembly in order to facilitate disassembly and/or cleaning. Adjustment of the position of the handle about the spindle enables the palm/grip of each hand to be changed in order to provide maximum control in different orientations.

Abstract: An adjustable reamer spindle is provided to aid the surgeon in controlling the instrument. The reamer spindle is easily disassembled for cleaning. The spindle has a repositionable handle, a locking ring, and an elastic device. The elastic device biases against a handle locking mechanism that locks the repositionable handle at angular positions about an axis of the spindle. The elastic device further biases a locking ring into a locked position. The locking ring aids in holding the reamer spindle together. Removal of the locking ring against an elastic bias of the elastic means unfastens an end of the assembly in order to facilitate disassembly and/or cleaning. • Publication number: 20100204702
Abstract: A precision adjustable surgical tool holder/driver is provided which is easily disassembled for cleaning and precisely reassembled. The holder/driver has a positionable handle allowing adjustment of the position of the handle about the spindle of the holder to enable the “handedness” of the holder to be changed in order to accommodate a user while operating from the left or right side of the patient, standing behind or in-front of the patient, or for use in different surgical methods. The holder/driver includes a “limited-play” capture mechanism, which connects the drive end of the housing to its locking sleeve via a limited-play locking device. The limited-play locking device utilizes a disengageable, precision fitted bayonet pin and seat combination in part to accomplish the precision reassembly feature of the present invention.

  • Patent number: 7682363
Abstract: An acetabular impactor aids a surgeon in controlling the installation of an acetabular cup prosthesis having a central, female aperture. The impactor includes an impactor head, housing and a locking mechanism. The housing is attached to the impactor head, the housing enclosing a drive train having, at a far end, a prosthesis engaging thread, and at the opposite end, a handle which facilitates turning of the drive train by the operator. The locking mechanism is associated with the housing which selectively locks the drive train, and thus the prosthesis, in position. The opposite end of the drive train has a latch device which enables quick removal from the housing for cleaning and sterilization.
