Abstract: Customers of a computing resource service provider may transmit requests to instantiate compute instances associated with a plurality of logical partitions. The compute instances may be executed by a server computer system associated with a particular logical partition of the plurality of logical partitions. For example, a compute service may determine a set of server computer systems that are capable of executing the compute instance based at least in part on placement information and/or a diversity constraint of the plurality of logical partitions.

The one or more components send resulting diagnostic information to an ingester which collects the diagnostic information. The ingester then sends the diagnostic information to a database. A generator is able to query the information in the database and create metrics. Based at least in part on metrics, an alarm may be triggered.

Abstract: A provider network determines which servers to use to host a group of virtual machines for a customer. A placement manager within the provider network employs a placement technique which prioritizes spreading virtual machines for the customer across different “subzones.” A subzone is a logical division of a provider network's hardware and/or software denoting risk boundaries. By placing virtual machines in separate subzones, the customer's virtual machines and thus the task collectively performed by the virtual machines are less impacted by a failure within one of the subzones.

Abstract: Client-side endpoint configuration can be accomplished by allowing a client to include as part of an API request, a desired endpoint for subsequent notifications from a server. The endpoint can be an endpoint identifier, such as a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) or a domain name. When a web service receives the API request from a client device, the web service can generate a response to the request and send the response to the endpoint identified in the request. The API request can asynchronously communicate with the client device whenever the response is completed.

Abstract: Capability based placement can be used for placing virtual machine instances on server computers (which can be configured to support one or more virtual machine slots) that are capable of running the instances in an efficient manner. For example, capability tags can be determined from the detailed characteristics (e.g., detailed hardware, software, and/or other characteristics) of the server computer and/or slots. For example, capability tags can indicate capabilities such as disk throughput, network bandwidth, database support, encryption support, video editing support, etc. Requests to launch virtual machine instances can be received and capability tags can be determined from the requests. Servers and/or slots that match the determined capability tags can be identified and used for launching the instances.
