Patent number: 10892548Abstract: A photoconductive antenna has an array of antenna electrodes on or in a photoconductive substrate. The photoconductive substrate is irradiated with light from a pulsed laser via micro-lenses above respective gaps between antenna electrodes. This makes the photoconductive substrate temporarily conductive, causing pulsed electric antenna currents that can be used for transmission of electromagnetic radiation in the Terahertz range. The bias circuit of the antenna is configured to determine voltages applied to the antenna electrodes by capacitive voltage division over a series of successive capacitors, each capacitor being formed by the antenna electrodes of a respective pair of successive ones of the antenna electrodes in the array as plates of the capacitor adjacent to a respective one of the gaps.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2016Date of Patent: January 12, 2021Assignee: TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITEIT DELFTInventors: Andrea Neto, Alessandro Garufo, Giorgio Carluccio, Nuria Llombart Juan

Patent number: 9865936Abstract: An array antenna has rectangular conductor sections, located successively side by side in a first plane, mutually separated by slots of constant width. A backing reflector is transverse to the first plane. Feed structures extend through the backing reflector, the feed structures comprising pairs of parallel feed conductors, each pair comprising conductors coupled to the rectangular conductor sections on opposite sides of a respective one of the slots.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2009Date of Patent: January 9, 2018Assignee: Nederlandse Organisatie Voor Toegepast-Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TNOInventors: Andrea Neto, Daniele Cavallo, Giampiero Gerini, Reindert Grooters, Giovanni Toso

Patent number: 8937577Abstract: A device with a substrate lens antenna uses a lens shaped dielectric body located on top of a planar feed antenna. A leaky wave antenna structure is used as feed antenna. The leaky wave antenna structure has a feed input and a first and second wave propagation branch extending from the feed input. The lens shaped dielectric body has a plane surface containing a focal point of the lens shaped dielectric body, the plane surface located adjacent the first plane, with the focal point adjacent the position of the feed input. Preferably the lens shaped dielectric body is spaced from the leaky wave structure at a sufficient distance to remove most of the propagation speed reduction effect of the dielectric on wave propagation along the leaky wave antenna. This helps to suppress undesirable side-lobes.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2009Date of Patent: January 20, 2015Assignee: Nederlandse Organisatie Voor Toegepast-Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TnoInventors: Andrea Neto, Giampiero Gerini

Patent number: 8421698Abstract: A leaky wave antenna has electrically conductive surfaces in parallel to each other. At one place a two-dimensional array of slots is provided in one of the surfaces. Elsewhere a feed structure is realized comprising one or more electrically conductive elements coupled between the first and second electrically conductive surface and configured to direct an electromagnetic wave pattern travelling between surfaces towards the array. In an embodiment the feed structure comprises a waveguide formed between walls connecting the surfaces. One of the walls is made to leak in order to feed the array of slots. In an embodiment the feed structure comprises a reflector comprising connections between the surfaces, to direct waves between the surfaces to the array of slots.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 2008Date of Patent: April 16, 2013Assignee: Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepastnatuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek TNOInventors: Andrea Neto, Mauro Ettorre, Giampiero Gerini

Patent number: 7916094Abstract: A leaky wave antenna contains a first and a second leaky wave antenna structure back to back against each other. Each antenna structure comprises a dielectric body and an elongated wave carrying structure, such as a slot in a conductive ground plane. In each leaky wave antenna structure the body and wave carrying structure are mutually arranged to radiate a leaky wave from the wave carrying structure through the dielectric body, the leaky wave radiating at a respective angle to the wave carrying structure. The dielectric bodies of the first and second wave antenna structure adjoin each other in a common plane that is at said respective angles to the wave carrying structures of the first and second wave antenna structure respectively, so that the ground planes are at an angle with respect to each other. The respective wave carrying structures run over into each other at said common plane, the antenna comprising a feed arranged to excite waves in both the respective wave carrying structures together.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2005Date of Patent: March 29, 2011Assignee: Nederlandse Organisatie Voor Toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TNOInventors: Andrea Neto, Raymond van Dijk, Filippo Marliani

Patent number: 7586464Abstract: An antenna comprises a conically shaped body of dielectric material. Cross-sections of the body have truncated elliptical shape, wherein each shape is truncated substantially through a first focus of the elliptical shape along a truncation line that extends substantially perpendicularly to a main axis of the elliptical shape. The second focus of the elliptical shape lies within the body. An elongated wave carrying structure such as a slot in a conductive ground plane extends substantially along a focal line through the first focus of the elliptical shapes in successive cross-sections. This structure supports transmission and/or reception over a wide range of frequencies. In an embodiment a multi-frequency feed structure is integrated in the ground plane of the antenna.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2005Date of Patent: September 8, 2009Assignee: Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk Onerzoek TNOInventors: Andrea Neto, Giampiero Gerini, Simona Bruni, Marco Sabbadini
