  • Patent number: 5161917
Abstract: An element for use in producing stabilized soil structures comprises a sheet of double-twisted galvanized and plastic-coated metal mesh which has on one end a box portion made from panel of the sheet panels and folded up from the end of the sheet and an additional transverse panel fixed to the sheet. In use a plurality of elements are superposed with the box portions providing the anterior wall of the structure and the remainder of each sheet extending back into the structure to stabilize the structure. Each element is filled and covered with fill material before a succeeding element is positioned on it.The fold lines of panels are defined by strips introduced into the mesh of sheet during manufacture.

  • Patent number: 4726708
Abstract: A mattress-type gabion for ground stabilization is formed from a base sheet of wire mesh by providing the sheet with folds from spaced apart transverse ribs and having the panels of the folds tied together at transversely spaced locations along each rib. Cuts in the base sheet flanking each rib zone can define other folds which can be tied to the ribs when edge strips of the sheet are folded up, thereby forming stably upwardly open compartments which can be filled with ballast and then closed by a mesh cover.

  • Patent number: 4477206
Abstract: A flexible mattress-like element usable as ballast or a load for immobilizing and protecting underwater pipelines, includes an outer flexible envelope, preferably made from a non-woven fabric, covering at least one gabion which is made from double-twist, hexagonal-mesh wire netting in the form of a somewhat-flattened parallelepiped and is filled with a mixture of stones or pebbles with a sand-, filler-, and bitumen-based mastic. The composition of the mastic is such that it is fluid at 150.degree. C. to 180.degree. C., semi-fluid at 100.degree. to 140.degree. C., plastic at 10.degree. to 50.degree. C., semi-plastic at temperatures of from 0.degree. C. to -10.degree. C., and tends to become rigid at temperatures below -10.degree. C. Each gabion is made from panels of netting in which the portions of wires which are twisted together are preferably arranged transverse the length of the gabion, that is, parallel to the axis of the pipeline to be immobilized and protected.
