    Abstract: In a process and apparatus for laser welding two metal sheets which overlap to form a flange seam and which are pressed together in the area of the flange seam, the metal sheets and the laser beam are moved relative to one another. Welding is performed using a laser beam situated in the plane of the flange seam. The metal sheets are simultaneously spread apart, at a position situated in front of the laser beam in the welding direction, and the laser beam is beamed into the area of the gap base of the spread-apart metal sheets.
