And individual segments may have light diffusing properties that are different than other segments of the light diffusing material. Some illumination elements may emit light of a different color spectrum than other illumination elements, and a light diffusing material may scatter the different colored light to illuminate a scene with combinations of light of different colors.     Abstract: A lighting module which provides adjustably controllable illumination of a camera field of view of a camera module includes an adjustable collimator which can be adjustably positioned such that the emitted light beam is adjustably directed to illuminate various regions of various camera fields of view. The collimator can be adjusted via an actuator which adjustably positions the collimator relative to static components of the lighting module, including the light emitter. The light beam can be directed to illuminate a selected limited region of a camera field of view, based on identification of a subject within the limited region. The light beam can be adjustably directed based on user interactions with a user interface, including adjusting the light beam according to user-commanded beam angle, intensity, and direction. The light beam can be adjustably directed to illuminate a region according to different fields of view of different camera modules.

    Abstract: A method for optimizing a dc operating drive current of a laser diode is presented. Lasers of a particular type are characterized in terms of the dependency of certain parameters on temperature and of the minimum bias current required for adequate laser speed. The minimum bias current is determined using the operating bias current minus the threshold current all normalized by the threshold current. For individual laser diodes, the threshold current and slope efficiency are obtained at various temperatures to allow calculation at operating temperatures of interest. The minimum laser bias current for speed can then be determined over the operating temperature range. This may be done by setting the optical power to the highest value calculated using this minimum acceptable bias criterion over the operating temperature range. The ac and dc laser driver current sourcing requirements may be computed to ensure laser and module compatibility.

    Abstract: An illumination source for use in projectors and the like. The illumination source includes a light source that generates a two-dimensional emission pattern having a light intensity that varies as a function of position in the emission pattern. A collector collects the light from the light source and illuminates an exit aperture therewith. The illuminated exit aperture has a two-dimensional emission pattern with a light intensity that varies as a function of position in a manner that is more uniform as a function of position than the emission pattern of the light source. An imaging optical element images the exit aperture onto a surface. The collector is preferably a compound parabolic concentrator or a compound elliptical concentrator. In one embodiment of the invention, a partially reflecting film is placed between the exit aperture and the imaging optical element.

    Abstract: A light source for generating light that is collected by an optical system that collects light leaving the light source within a predetermined acceptance angle relative to an axis defined in relation to the optical system. The light source includes a plurality of LEDs mounted on a reflecting base. Each of the LEDs generates light that leaves that LED via a top surface, a bottom surface, and one or more side surfaces of the LED. The reflecting base has a reflective surface in contact with the bottom surface of each of the LEDs. Light leaving the side surfaces of the LEDs is reflected into the acceptance angle of the optical system by a plurality of reflectors. In one embodiment of the invention, the reflectors include a plurality of reflecting facets for reflecting light leaving the side surfaces of the LEDs. The facets may be part of the reflective base or separate objects located between the LEDs. In another embodiment of the invention, the reflectors include scattering centers located between the LEDs.

The first and second solid state light sources emit light in first and second bands of non or only partially-overlapping wavelengths. The dichroic beam splitter combines light from the first and second solid state light sources by passing light in the first band while reflecting light in the second band to generate light having a spectral content in the first and second bands. The solid state light sources are preferably arrays of LEDs, VCSELs, or edge emitting semiconductor lasers. A light source having improved radiance in the green region of the spectrum can be constructed by utilizing first and second solid state light sources that emit in different bands in the green portion of the spectrum.

    Abstract: A light source constructed from a two dimensional array of light emitting devices. The light emitting devices include first, second and third types of light emitter. The first type of light emitting device covers a first area in the two dimensional array and emits light in a first region of the optical spectrum. The second type of light emitting device covers a second area in the two dimensional array and emits light in a second region of the optical spectrum, and the third type of light emitting device covers a third area in the two dimensional array and emits light in a third region of the optical spectrum. The first, second, and third areas are chosen such that the simultaneous output from all emitters generates white light. At least one of the emitter types covers an area larger than that covered by the others.
