The pattern may be based upon a grid of initial points associated with first intensities and points between the initial points with second intensities, and so on. The pattern may be rotated relative to cameras that capture the pattern, with captured images used active depth sensing based upon stereo matching of dots in stereo images.

    Abstract: A polarization-based dynamic focuser for a near-eye display includes a first polarizer configured to polarize environmental light incident on the first polarizer, such that environmental light passing through the first polarizer toward a user eye has a first polarity. An image source is positioned between the user eye and the first polarizer. The image source is transparent to the environmental light and is configured to output image display light toward the user eye, at least some of the image display light having a second polarity. A dynamic lens is positioned between the user eye and the image source, and is configured to selectively focus incident light having the second polarity toward the user eye at a controllable virtual distance, where the dynamic lens does not affect incident light having the first polarity.

    Abstract: An optical device comprises a pixel array including one or more pixels. Two or more independently controllable electrodes are electrically coupled to each pixel. A common ground reference electrode is electrically coupled to all pixels of the pixel array. Each pixel includes a plurality of liquid crystal molecules. The liquid crystal molecules may be oriented in a first direction based on a first function of voltages applied by the two or more independently controllable electrodes for the pixel, and oriented in a second direction based on a second function of the voltages applied by the two or more independently controllable electrodes for the pixel. In this way, both phase modulation and polarization modulation may be introduced to light illuminating the pixel array.

    Abstract: An image forming system includes a spatial light modulator (SLM) including a plurality of pixels. Each pixel is configured to diffract incident light and cause the diffracted light to exit the SLM, where a first diffraction order of light exiting the SLM passes through a first exit pupil and higher diffraction orders of light exiting the SLM pass through additional exit pupils having different positions from the first exit pupil. Control logic operatively coupled to the plurality of pixels is configured to control each pixel to control its modulation of the light incident on the pixel and cause the plurality of pixels to collectively form an image at each exit pupil. A light source is configured to emit incident light toward the SLM. A resampling layer is configured to subsample each pixel electrode with two or more samples per pixel to increase a spacing between each exit pupil.

    Abstract: A holographic display system includes a holographic optical element (HOE), which includes a first volume hologram configured to outcouple light to form a first exit pupil upon satisfaction of a first angular condition, and a second volume hologram configured to outcouple light to form a second exit pupil upon satisfaction of a second angular condition. A light source is configured to introduce light into the HOE at any of a range of angles. A light source controller sets a current angle of the light to a first angle that meets the first angular condition, forming the first exit pupil. The light source controller moves the first exit pupil by changing the current angle to a second angle that meets the first angular condition. The light source controller redirects light to form the second exit pupil by setting the current angle to a third angle that meets the second angular condition.

In the example phase modulating device, the blurring material is configured to smooth phase transitions in the phase modulating layer between localized areas associated with the pixel electrodes, the pixel electrodes have a pixel pitch by which the pixel electrodes are distributed along the phase modulating layer, and the pixel electrodes are separated from one another by an inter-pixel gap, where the ratio of the inter-pixel gap to the pixel pitch is between 0.50 and 1.0.

    Abstract: A holographic display includes a pixel array including one or more pixels, a holographic data source, a drive array, and a light source. Each pixel includes a phase-modulating structure and an amplitude-modulating structure. The holographic data source is configured to supply a holographic drive signal. The holographic drive signal includes, for each pixel in each of a plurality of time-varying holographic image frames, a phase component defining phase modulation for the pixel and an amplitude component defining amplitude modulation for the pixel. The drive array is configured to, for each pixel in each holographic image frame, modulate the phase-modulating structure according to the phase component and modulate the amplitude-modulating structure according to the amplitude component. The light source is configured to output coherent light to illuminate the one or more pixels of the pixel array.
