    Abstract: A method for the optimized operation of a transport container conveyor system for items of cargo, in particular of an airport luggage conveyor system, includes: a) introducing an item of cargo into the conveyor system at an introduction point; b) providing larger transport containers of a first category and smaller transport containers of a second category for receiving a respective item of cargo; c) automatically recording a dimension of the item of cargo; d) depending on the recorded dimension, automatically assigning the item of cargo to a transport container of a first or second category; e) automatically loading the assigned transport container with the item of cargo; f) transporting the transport container loaded with the item of cargo on active conveyor sections; g) repeating the above steps for further items of cargo.     Abstract: A baggage conveying system and method for space-optimized filling of a baggage carousel of the system with baggage items is provided, because reclaiming of baggage is delayed if baggage carousels at airports have no more capacity. The method includes transporting an item of baggage lying in a flat, stable transport position on a first conveying line of the system; standing up the item of baggage from the transport position into an upright position, the item of baggage taking up less contact area on the system in the upright position than the transport position; placing the item of baggage onto an empty place of the baggage carousel; moving the item of baggage in the upright position on the previously empty place, which is now filled, using the baggage carousel. The capacity of the baggage carousel is drastically increased while the space required by the baggage carousel remains the same.

    Abstract: The automated reading of luggage labels in airport baggage handling systems often fails since luggage labels, on which the luggage can be assigned sorting information, cannot be located and/or cannot be read since they are crumpled/creased/partially hidden. Removing and manually processing unreadable luggage items at a manual coding station requires removal conveyor sections, secure access routes and workstations. To increase the proportion of unreadable luggage items, a method and a system locate and handle a luggage label fastened to an item of luggage and which assigns sorting information to the item. If the identifier is not successfully located by a reader, the item is mechanically handled by a handling device. If the identifier is successfully located but the identifier is not successfully read, the identifier is mechanically handled by the handling device independently of the movement of the item. The item is then processed in accordance with its sorting information.
