  • Patent number: 5496917
Abstract: Polyarylene thioethers having recurring units of the formula[--(S--E--).sub.a --(--SO--E--).sub.b --(SO.sub.2 --E).sub.c --](I)in which E are, independently of one another, phenylene, naphthylene or biphenylene, a and c have, independently of one another, values from 0 to less than 1 and b has values from greater than zero to less than 1, with the proviso that the sum of a+b+c is equal to 1 and at least two of the indices are greater than zero, are obtained by oxidation of polyarylene sulfides in two stages, wherein in the first stage a polymer in solid form in a suspension medium is oxidized with ozone and the reaction product obtained is in the second stage reacted in acetic acid with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of catalytic amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid and/or with addition of equilibrium per-acids. The polyarylene thioethers are suitable for the production of molded parts having high temperature resistance and high resistance to chemicals.

  • Patent number: 5496916
Abstract: Process for preparing a polyarylene sulfone by oxidizing a polyarylene thioether in acetic acid with hydrogen peroxide, the reaction being carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid and/or with the addition of equilibrium per-acids. The reaction products are suitable for producing molded parts having high temperature resistance and high resistance to chemicals.

  • Patent number: 5466738
Abstract: Mixtures of liquid crystalline copolymers and fluorothermoplastics, and use thereof.Mixtures of A) liquid crystalline copolymers and B) fluorothermoplastics, having a proportion of A) of 45 to 97% by weight and a proportion of B) of 3 to 55% by weight, have an improved notched impact strength. They are therefore particularly suitable for producing molded articles or as a matrix material for composites.

  • Patent number: 5423902
Abstract: A filter material based on a polyarylene thioether having repeating units of the formula--[(Ar.sup.1).sub.n --X)].sub.m --[(Ar.sup.2).sub.i --Y)].sub.j --[(Ar.sup.3).sub.k --Z)].sub.l --[(Ar.sup.4).sub.o --W)].sub.p --(I)in which Ar.sup.1, Ar.sup.2, Ar.sup.3, Ar.sup.4, W, X, Y and Z, independently of each other, are identical or different, the indices n, m, i, j, k, l, o and p, independently of each other, are zero or integers 1, 2, 3 or 4, their sum being at least 2, Ar.sup.1, Ar.sup.2, Ar.sup.3 and Ar.sup.4 are arylene systems having 6 to 18 carbon atoms, and W, X, Y and Z are divalent linking groups, selected from --SO.sub.2 --, --S--, --SO--, --CO--, --O--, --CO.sub.2 --, or alkylene groups or alkylidene groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms is suitable for removing ozone from gases or liquids. The removal proceeds quantitatively, no volatile products being formed.

  • Patent number: 5366663
Abstract: Mixtures of liquid crystalline copolymers, polyether imides and compatibilizers and use thereof.Mixtures of at least one A) liquid crystalline copolymer, at least one B) polyether imide and at least one C) compatibilizer where the proportions of components A) and B) are each from 5 to 95 % by weight, based on the sum total of the two components, and the proportion of the compatibilizer C) is from 0.5 to 10 % by weight, based on the mixture of A) and B), have improved breaking strength and extension values. They are therefore highly suitable for producing molded articles or for use as matrix material for composites.
