  • Publication number: 20020136907
Abstract: A method of protecting a glass substrate, especially a display glass or a hard disk blank made from a glass or a glass-ceramic, from unacceptable surface damage and scratches, often leading to glass breakage, during processing and transport, is described. This protective method includes applying a removable protective coating made of at least one polymer layer, or at least one polyvinyl alcohol layer, to the glass substrates by spraying or rolling the polyvinyl alcohol or a polymer solution of the polymer to be applied in a polar organic solvent, onto the glass substrate, or dipping the substrate into it. Then when the substrate is ready for its end use, the protective coating is removed by washing in water or polar organic solution so that a residue does not remain on it. The glass substrates, protected in this manner have outstanding surface quality and improved hard disk blanks can be economically produced from them.

  • Publication number: 20020046724
Abstract: The invention relates to an intake system for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle for separating entrained water droplets. The intake system has an untreated air intake (10), an untreated air pipe (11) connected to said untreated air intake (10), and a water separator (12) adjoining said untreated air pipe (11). Inside the untreated air pipe (11) a swirl is produced to cause the aspirated air to rotate inside the untreated air pipe (11). The untreated air pipe (11) communicates with the internal combustion engine. The water separator (12) has an inner pipe (13) and an outer pipe (14), which are arranged coaxially to one another. The inner pipe (13) protrudes into the outer pipe (14), which is provided with a water outlet (20). Due to the coaxial construction of the water separator (12), the intake air flows into the downstream components without being diverted, so that no appreciable pressure losses are caused.

  • Patent number: 6315658
Abstract: A crop harvesting machine is equipped with a crop intake arrangement which delivers crop to a crop processing arrangement. In order to maintain a substantially constant flow of crop to the crop processing arrangement despite a variance in the amount of crop located in various locations on a field, a control circuit employing non-precise or fuzzy logic controls the forward propulsion speed of the harvesting machine and/or the speed of a conveyor used to unload a buffer or crop accumulator that is mounted upstream from the crop processing arrangement. This control is based on crop flow data obtained by a sensor that senses the rate and/or the amount of a crop taken up by the crop intake arrangement, and by a fill sensor associated with a buffer which temporarily accumulates crop at a location upstream from the crop processing arrangement.

  • Patent number: 6243065
Abstract: A ferroelectric liquid crystal-based light valve comprising a light input, a light output, a polarizing beam splitter, a reflective spatial light modulator and a switchable half-wave plate. Light polarized parallel to a first direction is received through the light input. Light from the light input and reflected by the spatial light modulator is output from the light output. The reflective spatial light modulator is structured as a quarter-wave plate and has a principal axis that switches through an angle &phgr;. The polarizing beam splitter has orthogonal directions of maximum transmissivity and maximum reflectivity, one of which is parallel to the first direction.

  • Patent number: 5795173
Abstract: A plug connector is provided, in particular for the connection of measuring instruments, which is to be connected to a plug having three flat elongated contact pins, a flat elongated protective contact pin and a threaded hole arranged in its center. The plug connector has a low maximum cross-sectional area and a high tightness. The plug connector has a housing (1) partly forming a cone (11), a hollow cylinder (12) which is molded onto the cone (11) on the side facing away from the plug and has an external thread (121), a nut (5) screwed onto the hollow cylinder (12), and a sealing element (4) which completely fills the hollow cylinder (12) and the nut (5). A four-way cable (3) penetrates the nut (5) and the sealing element (4) in the axial direction. A groove (14) is arranged on the side of the housing (1) facing toward the plug to accommodate a seal (6) and a ring (15) is molded on the cone (11) on the side facing toward the plug and encloses the plug coaxially at the end.

  • Patent number: 5659568
Abstract: The present invention provides a low noise multimode VCSEL that can be used to transmit data reliably on multimode optical media at data rates up to and exceeding 1 gigabit per second with bit error rates less than 1.times.10.sup.-9 errors/bit. In contrast to conventional multimode lasers where optimal mirror reflectivity is designed for maximum power output, in the present invention mirror reflectivity is increased to a point where the output power is less than half the maximum output power. Preferably, the reflectivity of the first and second mirror regions of the multimode laser is high, typically greater than 99.5%.

  • Patent number: 5622807
Abstract: The present invention is a composition for use in constructing a photosensitive film for recording color images. The preferred composition includes first, second, and third particle types. Each particle type comprises a crystalline base material having a trap dopant and a color dopant deposited therein. Each of the color dopants has a different activation energy for releasing electrons into the conduction/communication band of the crystalline base material. This results in a different spectral sensitivity for each dopant, and, hence for each particle type. In addition, each of the trap dopants has a different activation energy for releasing trapped electrons into the conduction/communication band of the crystalline base material. This enables the recorded color image to be read out one color at a time, which avoids color distortion. The invention also provides a photosensitive film for recording a color image. The film comprises a backing material having a plurality of depressions therein.
