It contains an ionizer in the flow path and an electrostatically charged filter downstream of the ionizer in the flow path, such that air can flow through the ionizer and filter. The ionizer also contains an electrode for generating a corona discharge that can be electrically connected to a high voltage source for the air filtering device, a counter electrode dedicated to the electrode, and an electrically conductive grid element upstream of the ionizer in the flow path. Substantial to the invention is that the counter electrode is electrically connected to an electrically conductive, flat, filtering layer in the filter.
