Publication number: 20200370083Abstract: Methods using photothermal nanoparticles in rapid nucleic acid amplification and photothermal nanoparticles include forming a reaction mixture comprising a nucleic acid template, a polymerase enzyme, and a heating media. The heating media comprises a plurality of photothermal nanoparticles suspended in a solution, fabricated on a microchip, or on a surface of a well in a multi-well plate. The photothermal nanoparticles are nanoparticles having a particular geometric shape and comprise a single component or a multi-component. The plurality of photothermal nanoparticles are further categorized by surface plasmon resonance with a resonance wavelength in a particular range to convert energy absorbed from a light source to sufficiently heat a volume of a composition for the transcription of the new nucleic acid strand. The particular geometric shape of the photothermal nanoparticles is selected from the group consisting of: polyhedral, spheroid, torus, and hollow shapes.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 21, 2020Publication date: November 26, 2020Inventors: Zhiyang Zeng, Maria Perez Cardenas, Cesear Corona, Wenhui Zhou, Poncho Meisenheimer, Doug Storts, Andrew Taft

Patent number: 10603534Abstract: An exercise apparatus providing a User multiple different exercises, including both resistance movements and isometrics. The User interacts with the apparatus by grasping a bar. A resistance mechanism is symmetrically mounted on a second bar and provides infinitely variable resistance to the User, as well as soundproof operation. A vertical column allows infinite positioning of the bars for different exercises, and a bench provides support. The User can change the exercise resistance by verbal commands, or the apparatus can sense the torque applied by the user to the apparatus and vary the exercise resistance in response to the force applied by the User or the speed at which the user is moving the bar. The apparatus can be battery powered and operated at locations where electric service is unavailable, or in zero gravity. To verify accuracy, the resistance can be calibrated against a known quantity of weight.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2017Date of Patent: March 31, 2020Inventors: Andrew A. Taft, Adolph James Balandis

Patent number: 9403048Abstract: An exercise apparatus that provides multiple different exercises for a User, including both resistance movements and isometrics. The User interacts with the apparatus by grasping a bar. A resistance mechanism is symmetrically mounted on a second bar and provides infinitely variable resistance to the User, as well as soundproof operation. There is a vertical column that allows infinite positioning of the bars for different bodily exercises, and a bench for support. The User can change the exercise resistance by verbal commands, or the apparatus can vary the exercise resistance in response to the force applied by the User. The apparatus can be operated at locations where electric service is permanently unavailable, or in zero gravity; and the apparatus can be mounted inside a shallow closet and hidden from view. To verify accuracy, the resistance can be calibrated against a known quantity of weight.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2015Date of Patent: August 2, 2016Assignee: Balandis Taft Patents, LLCInventors: Adolph James Balandis, Andrew A Taft

Patent number: 5352255Abstract: A noise maker having a housing with a hole formed on at least one surface of the housing and a weighted member in resilient relationship over the hole. The weighted member is movable between a first position closing the hole to a second position for allowing a desired volume of air to flow through the hole so as to produce an audible sound. The weighted member is slidably mounted on a dowel rod within the housing. A slider plate is provided with a plurality of hole sizes formed thereon. The slider plate is interposed between the hole and the weighted member. The hole is formed on a first planar surface of the housing. The housing has an opening formed on a second planar surface of the housing. The first and second planar surfaces are in parallel relationship. A chamber extends between these surfaces. The surfaces in the chamber are permanently coupled together. The chamber has a rectangular configuration.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1993Date of Patent: October 4, 1994Inventor: Andrew A. Taft

Patent number: 5342423Abstract: An air filter apparatus for an HVAC system having a frame with a channel area formed therein and having legs extending into the channel area, and a filter material having a portion received within the channel area. The filter material extends across the frame. The legs of the frame extend so as to exert a compressive force on the edges of the filter material received therebetween. The filter material has a first flexible mesh layer, a fibrous layer, and a second flexible mesh layer formed in a sandwiched configuration. The frame has a T-shaped slot extending longitudinally along an outer surface of the frame. The frame also has a notch formed along a corner of the frame and extends around the frame. A bead of an elastomeric material is received within this notch so as to extend outwardly of the frame.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1993Date of Patent: August 30, 1994Inventor: Andrew A. Taft
