  • Patent number: 9382924
Abstract: An transmission servo assembly having a dual piston assembly for use in an automobile to transmission is described. The dual piston assembly includes a primary and a secondary piston that, when included within an assembly housing, provide surfaces that may be acted upon by a pressurized fluid so as to drive a servo pin into and away from a band within the transmission. The dual piston assembly allows for the application of a high apply force to servo pin while reducing the pressure of both an apply fluid and a release fluid, and therefore the amount of power used by a fluid pump external to the transmission servo assembly. The transmission servo assembly also substantially eliminates band drag by balancing the pressure applied to surfaces of dual piston system and by providing a biasing member designed and configured to provide suitable initial and ending forces to dual piston system.

  • Patent number: 7770704
Abstract: A multiplate torque converter clutch system, which is adapted for installation in torque converters of different automatic transmission manufacturers, namely, BORG WARNER, ALLISON, FORD, GENERAL MOTORS, and CHRYSLER transmissions. The present multiplate torque converter clutch system is provided in kit format including a hybrid lock-up piston/damper plate subassembly, multiple clutch plates including friction rings, a set of outer damper springs, and a set of inner damper springs. The present multiplate torque converter clutch system also includes a torque converter cover subassembly and a turbine hub subassembly configured to adapt the present torque converter clutch system to different vehicle engines and transmissions respectively. The hybrid lock-up piston/damper plate subassembly can be tuned to match a peak engine torque value by changing the number of damper springs.

  • Patent number: 7565958
Abstract: A hybrid GENERAL MOTORS 4L80E torque converter and a method of converting a GENERAL MOTORS 4T40E torque converter core into the present hybrid GENERAL MOTORS 4L80E torque converter for high performance applications. The present invention includes GENERAL MOTORS 4L80E compatible parts, which are provided in a race kit format to complete the conversion. The present kit includes a hybrid impeller hub, a hybrid turbine hub, a hybrid one-way roller clutch, a hybrid front cover pilot, an adapter ring, a thrust washer, and a set of machine screws. In a method of the present invention the GENERAL MOTORS 4T40E torque converter core undergoes multiple machining operations to remove the original equipment impeller hub, turbine hub, and front cover pilot from the GENERAL MOTORS 4T40E torque converter core, which are each replaced by their counterparts in the present race kit to complete the conversion to the hybrid GENERAL MOTORS 4L80E torque converter.

  • Patent number: 7204357
Abstract: A high performance clutch pack for use in the high gear clutch of a POWERGLIDE transmission is disclosed. The present clutch pack is disposed in a modified clutch drum including fluid exhaust vents to reduce piston drag and weight reduction features for accommodating up to ten friction disks and eleven steel disks representing a 150 percent increase in holding force in comparison to the stock POWERGLIDE clutch pack, which typically provides only four friction disks and five steel disks. In one embodiment the steel disks include elliptically shaped holes at predetermined locations for imparting turbulence to the flow of transmission fluid within the clutch pack and also feature anti-drag spacers for reducing parasitic drag during freewheeling. The clutch pack is actuated by a modified clutch piston having an increased stroke correlated to the increased number of friction disks delivering maximum holding force with minimal increase in rotating mass.

The present clutch assembly is disposed in a modified clutch drum having weight reduction features for receiving a modified clutch pack comprising up to ten friction disks and eleven steel disks, which represents a 150 per cent increase in surface contact area and holding force in comparison to the original equipment Powerglide clutch pack having only four friction disks and five steel disks. The present clutch pack assembly is actuated by a modified clutch piston having an increased stroke correlated to the increased number of friction disks providing maximum holding force for the present clutch pack assembly with minimal increase in rotating mass.

  • Patent number: 6902046
Abstract: A high performance sprag clutch assembly and replacement system for a land motor vehicle transmission, which utilizes a commercially available sprag assembly popular among high performance enthusiasts in combination with newly manufactured inner and outer races to achieve the maximum rated torque capacity is disclosed. The outer race and stator end cap components have been designed to reduce the overall axial length to adapt the sprag clutch assembly to the limited axial space within the stator component of the torque converter of various transmissions. The interlocking stator caps function to reduce race eccentricity under load to ensure that each individual sprag element carries the torque equally to prevent the sprag elements from being rolled over in operation causing severe damage. A plurality of interchangeable inner races adapt the present sprag clutch system for use with GENERAL MOTORS, FORD, and CHRYSLER transmission input shaft configurations.
