  • Publication number: 20090287978
Abstract: An integrated circuit (2) includes a signal source (4, 6) and a signal destination (10, 12) linked by a signal path (8). Error correction codes (e.g. Hamming codes) are applied to the signals to be transmitted. Errors detected in the signal transmission are used to control an operating parameter of the signal path, such as signal voltage level, body bias voltage, clock frequency and/or temperature. The control applied is closed-loop feedback control seeking to maintain a finite non-zero predetermined error rate. The technique can also be used between a memory accessing integrated circuit (54) and a separate memory integrated circuit (56). Furthermore, the technique can be used to provide fixed, but differing operating parameters for signal lines within a signal path.

  • Publication number: 20090278799
Abstract: The claimed subject matter provides a system and/or a method that facilitates detecting a plurality of inputs simultaneously. A laser component can be coupled to a line generating (LG) optic that can create a laser line from an infrared (IR) laser spot, wherein the laser component and line generating (LG) optic emit a plane of IR light. A camera device can capture a portion of imagery within an area covered by the plane of light. The camera device can be coupled to an IR-pass filter that can block visible light and pass IR light in order to detect a break in the emitted plane of IR light. An image processing component can ascertain a location of the break within the area covered by the emitted plane of IR light.

  • Publication number: 20090279024
Abstract: A cholesteric liquid crystal display device (24) has a protective sheet (40) or a stack of protective sheets adhered to the substrate (11) at the front of a stack of cells (10B, 10G, 10R) containing cholesteric liquid crystal material (19). The protective sheet is adhered by a layer of adhesive (40) which is either an adhesive curable by heat or an adhesive curable by light. The adhesive contains a UV blocking agent, for example, a compound based on benzophenone, having a property of reducing the transmission of ultra-violet light through the adhesive. The protective sheet (s) provides protection to the display device and may be made of glass or plastic. Adhering the protective sheet (s) with an adhesive provides the advantages of being much cheaper to implement than laminated glass and of allowing the adhesive to contain the UV blocking agent for UV protection of the cholesteric liquid crystal material.

  • Publication number: 20090277578
Abstract: A method of laminating a surface of a flexible material to a surface of a rigid, curved material. The method includes pressing an area of the surface of the flexible material into the surface of the rigid, curved material with a holder to create a contact area while the flexible material is conformed to the holder, which has a curvature greater than a curvature of the rigid, curved material surface; and changing the contact area between the surface of the flexible material and the surface of the rigid, curved material while maintaining pressure on the contact area until the surface of the flexible material and the surface of the rigid curved material are laminated.

  • Patent number: 7615780
Abstract: Disclosed herein are biosensors and methods for making and using the same. In one embodiment, the sensor for detecting an analyte comprises: a substrate, recognition elements specific for the analyte, an excitation source, a detector, a chamber located between the substrate and the excitation source and between the substrate and the detector, and an emission filter. The recognition elements are tethered to the substrate such that the recognition elements can be exposed to a sample. The excitation source is capable of emitting a first light having a first light peak intensity at a first wavelength, wherein the first light can excite a luminophore to emit a second light when the recognition elements interact with the analyte. The detector is capable of detecting the second light emitted by the luminophore. The emission filter is capable of filtering in a band gap that includes the first light peak intensity.

  • Publication number: 20090255740
Abstract: A voltage estimation system for motor control feedback is described. The system may include one or more control modules which may generate voltage commands. An overmodulation or “clipping” module receiving a voltage command can generate a clipped voltage. Rather than measuring directly, a voltage estimator may estimate the clipped voltage based on the duty cycle command to the inverter. This estimated voltage may then be used by a flux estimator to estimate a flux value. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

  • Patent number: 7596989
Abstract: A probe for an atomic force microscope is adapted such that, as a sample is scanned, it experiences a biasing force urging the probe towards the sample. This improves probe tracking of the sample surface and faster scans are possible. This is achieved by either including a biasing element, which is responsive to an externally applied force, on the probe and/or reducing the quality factor of a supporting beam. This biasing element may, for example, be a magnet or an electrically-conducting element. The quality factor may be reduced by coating the beam with a mechanical-energy dissipating material.

  • Publication number: 20090249037
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for executing instructions from a plurality of instruction threads on a multi-threaded processor. The instruction threads may each include instructions of different complexity. A plurality of pipelines for executing instructions are provided and an instruction scheduler determines on each clock cycle the pipelines upon which instructions will be executed. Some of the pipelines are configured to appear to the instruction threads as single pipelines but in fact comprise two pipeline paths, one for executed instructions of lower complexity and the other. The instruction scheduler determines on which of the two pipeline paths an instruction should execute.

  • Publication number: 20090240664
Abstract: A distributed database system has multiple compute nodes each running an instance of a database management system (DBMS) program that accesses database records in a local buffer cache. Records are persistently stored in distributed flash memory on multiple storage nodes. A Sharing Data Fabric (SDF) is a middleware layer between the DBMS programs and the storage nodes and has API functions called by the DBMS programs when a requested record is not present in the local buffer cache. The SDF fetches the requested record from flash memory and loads a copy into the local buffer cache. The SDF has threads on a home storage node that locate database records using a node map. A global cache directory locks and pins records to local buffer caches for updating by a node's DBMS program. DBMS operations are grouped into transactions that are committed or aborted together as a unit.

  • Patent number: 7587419
Abstract: A data structure for representing metadata describes the content of at least one shot or sub-shot of information material. The data structure comprises a volume identification defining a data carrier on which the information material is contained, at least one shot identification defining the shot or sub-shot within the material, and at least one type of metadata associated with the content of the shot or sub-shot. The volume identification is arranged at a first hierarchical level and the shot identification is arranged at a lower hierarchical level and the metadata describing the shot is arranged with respect to the shot hierarchical level. The data structure provides an efficient facility for communicating metadata between metadata nodes including application programs which use the metadata. The metadata is identified on the basis of a shot and volume on which the information material which the metadata describes is contained.
