    Abstract: The invention concerns a process for making a toothpaste containing an abrasive agent and a binder consisting wholly or partly of guar gum or other plant gum. The plant gum is hydrated by a liquid hydration medium consisting of water and 0 to 33% by weight of the hydration medium of sorbitol. To hydrate the plant gum it is mixed with the hydration medium in the presence of sufficient of the abrasive agent to produce enough shear to give a smooth cream. Other conventional ingredients are then mixed in.
