  • Publication number: 20060056447
Abstract: In accordance with the teachings described herein, systems and methods are provided for configuring signaling radio bearer information in a user equipment protocol stack. A wireless network may be used that includes a radio access network for transmitting information between a user equipment device and a core network. An instruction may be received to generate a signaling radio bearer configuration information element (IE) that includes configuration information for a pre-selected number of signaling radio bearers. The signaling radio bearer configuration IE may then be generated, while ensuring that the signaling radio bearer configuration IE includes configuration information for a required minimum number of signaling radio bearers. The signaling radio bearer configuration information element may be transmitted from the radio access network to the user equipment device for use in configuring the signaling radio bearers in the user equipment device.

  • Publication number: 20060035642
Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for maintaining transparent mode radio bearers in a Radio Access Network (RAN) of a third generation mobile telecommunications network. The method relates to managing the radio resources allocated to a user equipment (UE) in said radio access network (RAN). The method generally comprises communicating a message from a radio resource controller (RRC) of the RAN to the UE where said message is arranged to instruct the UE to transition from a dedicated channel connection state to a lower activity connection state and to store in its memory transparent mode (TM) radio bearer (RB) information associated with said dedicated channel connection state. By storing TM RB information associated with the dedicated channel connection state, the UE can be reconfigured to the dedicated channel connection state without the RAN having to perform a radio bearer setup procedure.

  • Publication number: 20060030294
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for ciphering messages in mobile telecommunications system user equipment are disclosed. The apparatus is arranged to receive ciphering configuration parameters in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) layer; forward ciphering configuration parameters to a Radio Link Control (RLC) or Medium Access Control (MAC) layer; and, in response to subsequent receipt of a message from the network, which message indicates that the user equipment device is to start ciphering, configuring the user equipment device to start ciphering using the ciphering configuration parameters in the RLC/MAC layer.

  • Publication number: 20050250529
Abstract: Mobile user equipment for use in a cellular communications environment performs an improved cell selection on transitions out of a connected mode state. The transitions might be from one connected mode state to another or from a connected mode state to idle mode. The improvement in cell selection lies in assembling the list of candidate cells prior to cell selection. In the prior art, the list of candidate cells would usually be restricted to the serving cell or active cells supporting communication between the equipment and the network prior to transition. In embodiments of the invention, the list might comprise cells which are not the serving cell or which are outside the active set, for example a network-preferred cell or cells neighbouring the serving cell or cells of the active set.

  • Publication number: 20050177623
Abstract: In a mobile telecommunications system comprising a network of a plurality of cells and at least one user equipment device, the method comprises, in the user equipment device, when the user equipment has system information stored in the user equipment device, which system information has an associated expiration time limit, reading broadcast system information before the end of the expiration time limit and storing updated system information in the user equipment device.

  • Publication number: 20050153700
Abstract: In a mobile telecommunications system comprising a network of a plurality of cells and at least one user equipment device, the user equipment is arranged, when the user equipment re-configures itself to enter a new state or performs cell reselection, to read broadcast system information and, when the broadcast system information indicates a change in system information, to update the system information of the user equipment device.

  • Publication number: 20050101298
Abstract: The details of an apparatus and method are disclosed for processing a message which is missing a Ciphering Activation Time for DPCH when this is required, the message being one of a number of possible messages, namely a Radio Bearer Setup message, a Radio Bearer Reconfiguration message, a Radio Bearer Release message, a Transport Channel Reconfiguration message, a Physical Channel Reconfiguration message, a Cell Update Confirm message, a URA Update Confirm message and a UTRAN Mobility Information message.

  • Publication number: 20050086466
Abstract: The details of an apparatus and method for determining uplink ciphering activation time in universal mobile telecommunications system user equipment are disclosed herein. The ciphering activation time is determined for radio bearers other than RB2 by measuring the data rate on each target radio bearer during the time that it takes for a polling or RRC message sent from the user equipment UE to be acknowledged by the network UTRAN. For RB2, the uplink ciphering activation time is determined by taking into account the size of the RRC response message and the data already queued on RB2 for transmission.

  • Publication number: 20050070252
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing messages received by a device from a network. The method comprises receiving a message that indicates that the device should be in a dedicated channel state (such as Cell_DCH), wherein the message is a message other than a reconfiguration message (e.g. CUC) and, in response to the message, clearing from the device any record of a cell identifier (C_RNTI).

  • Publication number: 20050070273
Abstract: The details of an apparatus and method for responding to a cell or URA update confirm message with a correct C-RNTI information element are disclosed herein. When a UE receives a Cell or URA Update Confirm message from a UTRAN, it determines whether a response is required prior to entering the state specified in the message. If a response is required it uses the new C-RNTI element to send the response, if this element is available.

  • Publication number: 20050070253
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing a message in a mobile telecommunications device. The method comprises: receiving a Cell Update Confirm (CUC) message; determining whether the device has an empty C_RNTI variable; when the device has an empty C_RNTI variable, determining whether the CUC message includes a new C_RNTI; when the CUC message includes a new C_RNTI and the CUC message would cause the device to enter a state which requires the UE to respond to the message before entering the state, carrying out at least one further step prior to entering the state.
