    Abstract: Presented are variable compression ratio and independent compression and expansion engines, methods for making/operating such engines, and vehicles equipped with such engines. An engine assembly includes an engine block with a cylinder bore defining a combustion chamber, and a piston movable within the cylinder bore. A valve assembly, which is fluidly coupled to the combustion chamber, selectively introduces/evacuates fluid from the combustion chamber. A crankshaft is supported by the engine block and rotatable on a first axis. A multipoint linkage, which drivingly engages the piston to the crankshaft, rotates on a second axis offset from the first axis. A control shaft is supported by the engine block and rotates on a third axis offset from the first and second axes. The control shaft operable to selectively rotate the multipoint linkage on the second axis, and is operable to selectively unseat the valve assembly.

    Abstract: A direct injection assembly includes a follower mechanism having an input piston operably engaged with a camshaft and moving between first and second input positions along a first follower axis, in response to the camshaft rotating about a camshaft axis. The follower mechanism further includes an output piston movable between first and second output positions along a second follower axis. The follower mechanism further includes a coupler mechanism movable between a deactivated state and an activated state where the coupler mechanism holds the input piston and the output piston in fixed positions relative to one another, such that the coupler mechanism transmits a force from the input piston to the output piston. A pump includes a plunger movable from a first plunger position to a second plunger position where the plunger pressurizes the volume of fuel, in response to the plunger receiving the force from the output piston.

    Abstract: An engine variable compression ratio arrangement can be equipped in an internal combustion engine. The engine variable compression ratio arrangement includes a planetary gear set. The planetary gear set receives rotational drive input from an engine crankshaft, and the planetary gear set transmits rotational drive output to an eccentric shaft. The rotational position of the eccentric shaft is shifted relative to the rotational position of the engine crankshaft by way of the planetary gear set. This shifting varies the compression ratio of the internal combustion engine.
