Patent number: 11017585Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes a computing system which may receive captured image data from a camera assembly. The camera assembly may include one or more cameras and an actuator to move the cameras. The image data may include frames that were captured while the actuator was moving the cameras. The computing system may determine for each frame, the time and position of the camera at the point that the image data was captured. The computing system may then generate an index of the captured image data and the associated time and position data. The index may be utilized for reconstructing the scene around the camera assembly from a viewpoint which is different from the viewpoint of any one of the cameras. This reconstruction may be performed based on one or more frames of the captured image data queried using the index, the viewpoint, and a time of interest.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2018Date of Patent: May 25, 2021Assignee: Facebook, Inc.Inventors: Michael John Toksvig, Brian Keith Cabral, Joyce Hsu, Andrew Hamilton Coward

Patent number: 10291828Abstract: A scalable three-dimensional (3D), 360-degree camera system is configured to capture images and/or video across 360 degrees of a local area. The camera system includes a plurality of cameras that are coupled to a spherical inner core, which is enclosed within an exterior shell composed of several segments. The exterior shell segments include apertures that align with each camera, and an interior shell component is concentrically aligned with each aperture. The configuration of the exterior shell segments and the interior shell components protect the camera assembly from physical damage and the environment and additionally improve heat dissipation from internal components of the camera system. Design parameters of the camera system can be determined to adjust the number of cameras, the size of the inner core, the positioning of the cameras on the inner core, and the number and configuration of the segments of the interior and exterior shell.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2018Date of Patent: May 14, 2019Assignee: Facebook, Inc.Inventors: Joyce Hsu, Jussi Antero Timonen, James Gilbert Ammon, Oscar Karlsson, Casper Asmussen, Felix Antoine, Andrew Hamilton Coward

Patent number: 10230904Abstract: A camera system is configured to capture 360 degree image information of a local area, at least a portion of which is in stereo. The camera system includes a plurality of peripheral cameras, a plurality of axis cameras, a first rigid plate, and a second rigid plate, each aligned along an alignment axis. The peripheral cameras are arranged in a ring configuration that allows objects in the local area past a threshold distance to be within the fields of view of at least two peripheral cameras. The first and second rigid plates secure to a top and a bottom surface of the ring of peripheral cameras, respectively. At least one axis camera is arranged along the alignment axis and is coupled perpendicularly to a surface of the first rigid plate.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2016Date of Patent: March 12, 2019Assignee: Facebook, Inc.Inventors: Brian Keith Cabral, Forrest Samuel Briggs, Joyce Hsu, Albert Parra Pozo, Andrew Hamilton Coward

Patent number: 9476428Abstract: A turbine-driven alternator (i.e., a turbomachine) suitable for generating electrical power from process gas waste energy. In particular suitable for very high density process gases such as super critical CO2, R134a, R245fa, etc. The turboalternator comprises two separate machines, specifically, a turbine device and an alternator device operatively connected together by a coupling shaft. The rotating shaft assemblies for each machines on the turbine side and the alternator side are supported by hydrodynamic foil gas bearings. The foil gas bearings use process gas at the turbine side, enabling high-pressure operation (˜3000 psia) and thrust load balancing. At the alternator side, cooling fluid is used in the foil gas bearings, enabling high-speed (˜40,000 rpm), low-windage, oil-free operation with closed-loop shaft cooling.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2012Date of Patent: October 25, 2016Assignee: R & D Dynamics CorporationInventors: Giridhari L. Agrawal, Charles W. Buckley, Ali Shakil, Andrew Hamilton Coward
