    Abstract: In one aspect, a method of performing electrostatic repulsion-hydrophilic interaction chromatography on a protein, peptide, or amino acid includes providing a column having an anion-exchange material at a pH of less than about 4, and eluting the compound using a mobile phase comprising an amount of organic solvent sufficient to substantially balance the electrostatic repulsion of the stationary phase with hydrophilic interaction. In another aspect, a method of performing electrostatic repulsion-hydrophilic interaction chromatography on a nucleic acid or nucleotide comprises providing a column having a cation-exchange material at a pH of less than about 3.4, and eluting the compound using a mobile phase comprising organic solvent sufficient to substantially balance the electrostatic repulsion of the stationary phase with hydrophilic interaction.

    Abstract: A method for extracting prion protein from a biological material, e.g., an animal tissue or product. In a specific example, abnormal prion protein is extracted from homogenized sheep brain with hexafluoro-2-propanol. The hexafluoro-2-propanol is separated from the aqueous brain preparation by increasing the ionic strength of the aqueous solution. Prion protein in the organic extract can be further purified, or the extract can be tested, e.g., by immunoassay, for the presence of prion protein, and more particularly abnormal prion protein. The extraction process permits testing for the presence of abnormal prior protein, e.g., for diagnosis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE).

    Abstract: The apparatus is a hanger for the ends of the axle of a roll of sheet goods such as carpeting. The hanger is a short "U" channel with a spindle attached across the top of the "U" and protruding out from one side. The spindle is used to substitute for the pin between links of vertical endless chains which hold multiple rolls for display. The side of the "U" opposite from the protruding spindle has a slot which curves down from a vertical edge of the side toward the bottom of the "U". A spring loaded catch pivots across the slot, but only moves in the direction which permits the end of a roller axle to enter the slot while preventing the axle from lifting out from the slot.

    Abstract: A pellicular coated support and method for producing such a support are disclosed. The support includes a thin layer of adsorbate that is adsorbed to and cross-linked on an inorganic support material with the thus formed support being particularly well suited for use in liquid chromatography. An inorganic support of silica, alumina or titania has the pellicular coating formed thereon with the coating being an amine that is crosslinked by a crosslinking agent of epoxy resin, bromide or nitro alcohol.
