  • Patent number: 6093468
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved protective pad for protecting the human body against impact forces. The pad is formed using layers of high density closed-cell polymer foam low density closed-cell polymer foam, and resilient or non-resilient energy absorbing inserts. The high density layer absorbs and shunts impact forces, while the low density layer acts as a cushion against the human body, and provides for comfort. The pad can be provided with a plurality of holes through its thickness to provide for breathability and release of heat from the human body, the surface area of the holes being great enough to allow for adequate ventilation but not so great as to significantly decrease the protection offered by the pad. The pad can also be provided with a plurality of score lines across its surface and partially through its thickness to provide for flexibility and conformability to the part of the human body being protected.

  • Patent number: 5520875
Abstract: A coextruded, multilayer polymeric film having a core layer including a surfactant and at least one outer layer is placed on a forming structure. The forming structure moves in a direction parallel to the direction of travel of the multilayer film and carries the multilayer film in that direction. A fluid pressure differential is applied across the thickness of the multilayer film along the direction of movement of the forming structure. The fluid pressure differential is sufficiently great to cause the multilayer film to conform with the forming structure forming a formed polymeric web. The formed polymeric web is exposed to a temperature which is sufficiently great enough to allow the surfactant in the core layer to migrate to the outer layer to form a surfactant treated formed polymeric web.

  • Patent number: 5391423
Abstract: Biodegradable, liquid impervious multilayer film compositions are disclosed. In particular, the films comprise composite structures derived from multilayer combinations of biodegradable polymers. The biodegradable polymers are selected from the categories of moisture sensitive polymers, thermally sensitive polymers, mechanically limited polymers, polymers not easily processed into films, hydrolytically cleavable polymers, and degradable elastomers. Optionally, the multilayer films may further comprise additional adhesive tie layers. The biodegradable polymers are combined in various ways to overcome the deficiencies of the individual components, yet at the same time impart specific performance properties to the film. The multilayer film compositions are suitable for use as backsheets in disposable absorbent products including diapers, adult incontinent pads, sanitary napkins, pantiliners, and the like.

  • Patent number: 5343024
Abstract: A microwave susceptor which includes a dielectric substrate and a dry layer of microwave active coating material overlaying at least a portion of the substrate is provided. The coating material includes a silicate binder and an active constituent and the weight ratio of the silicate to active is about 98:2 or less (i.e. less silicate). The dry layer is electrically continuous and has a surface concentration of active constituent of about 1 gram per square meter or greater. Sodium silicate is preferred as the binder and graphite is preferred as the active constituent. In addition additives such as saccharides, glycerine and plasticizers can be added to inhibit thermal shut down and to increase the flexibility of the dry layer. The susceptor can exhibit moderate heat performance or even high heating performance if desired.

  • Patent number: 5008110
Abstract: A shelf-stable device for transdermally administering an active pharmaceutical to a patient. The device includes a drug reservoir that contains the drug formulation. In one preferred embodiment of the present invention, the drug reservoir is sandwiched between an upper and a lower solvent barrier film that are made from a material such as a polyester that will not absorb the drug and/or skin permeating enhancing solvent, if any, contained within the reservoir. The drug reservoir and solvent barrier films are encapsulated within a hermetically-sealed compartment that protects the drug formulation from common environmental factors such as water vapor, oxygen, and light which can adversely affect the stability and efficacy of the drug formulation. The hermetically-sealed compartment also prevents the drug formulation from coming into contact with and possibly dissolving the adhesive used to secure the device to the patients's skin.

  • Patent number: 4753832
Abstract: A barrier laminate for making containers and cartons that substantially resist the absorption of essential oils and flavoring components, e.g. peel oil, as well as the oxidation of 1-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) normally found in various beverages such as fruit and citrus juices. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the present laminate comprises a substrate material having a thin layer of PET-G (glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate) bonded to the substrate's inner and outer surfaces, said PET-G layer becoming the beverage-contacting surface of containers made from such a laminate. In other particularly preferred embodiments, the barrier laminate also includes one or more intermediate layers of oxygen barrier materials between the laminate's substrate and beverage-contacting layer of PET-G. Also disclosed are methods of making such barrier laminates and containers therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4514345
Abstract: A process for making relatively thick foraminous members the foramina of which form a preselected pattern. The backing film such as a thermoplastic film is placed in contact with a rotating drum. A foraminous woven element about which the foraminous member will be constructed is placed in contact with the thermoplastic backing film. Liquid photosensitive resin is supplied to a controlled thickness. A mask comprising the preselected pattern is placed adjacent the photosensitive resin and the resin is exposed through the mask to the light of an activating wavelength. Uncured resin is washed from the composite leaving behind the completed foraminous member.
