Patent number: 6597141Abstract: A method of calculating the position of the rotor of a motor (1) in for example an electrical power assisted steering assembly is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of measuring the output shaft (2) (i.e. steering column) position, and scaling the measured value to produce an estimated motor rotor position value. This estimated value will be relative to an arbitrary datum point, and so the method further includes steps of adding an offset value derived from low resolution measurements of rotor position obtained using Hall effect sensors provided on the motor. Offsets for compensating for backlash and (in a second embodiment) compliance can also be included. Thus, the method allows high resolution information from an output shaft sensor (e.g. a torque sensor with a position dependent output) to be combined with the low resolution output from the Hall effect sensors to produce a high resolution rotor position signal.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2000Date of Patent: July 22, 2003Assignee: TRW LucasVarity Electric Steering Ltd.Inventors: Russell Wilson-Jones, Anthony Walter Burton, Andrew James Stephen Williams, John Michael Ironside

Patent number: 6445155Abstract: A method of monitoring the operation of a brushless motor is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of monitoring the current flowing into or out of the windings of the motor using a current measurement circuit to produce an output signal indicative of the current; measuring the output of the current measurement circuit when the instantaneous current flow through the current measurement circuit is known to be substantially zero; and producing a modified output signal which is compensated for any differences between the actual measured output signal value and an ideal output signal value. The method enables any drift in the output signal to be compensated “on-line” whilst the is running.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2000Date of Patent: September 3, 2002Assignee: TRW Lucas Varity Electric Steering Ltd.Inventors: Andrew James Stephen Williams, Anthony Walter Burton

Patent number: 6282472Abstract: An electrical power assisted steering system is disclosed having a boost curve which has inverse symmetry about a zero input torque value, each half of the boost curve comprising a first portion defined by a first polynomial equation between a zero value and a first value, and a second portion defined by a second polynomial between a second value and a third value, in which the gradient of the first portion of the curve at the first value is equal to the gradient of the second portion of the curve at the second value. By storing values for the first, second and third values and the gradient of each polynomial at those values a smooth boost curve can be defined by storing only a small amount of parameters.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1999Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: TRW LucasVarity Electric Steering Ltd.Inventors: Russell Wilson Jones, Andrew James Stephen Williams

Patent number: 5821714Abstract: A commutation control strategy for eliminating torque ripple and noise from a brushless motor which has a plurality of motor phases connected in a bridge, each phase having a top switching device provided between a phase winding and a positive voltage supply and a bottom switching device provided between the phase winding and a less positive voltage supply in which following commutations of the motor, when the current flowing in a first phase is decaying towards zero and the current in a second phase is rising from zero, the switching devices are operative between a state in which the current flowing in the first phase is caused to decay at a first rate, and another state in which the current flowing in the first phase is caused to decay at a second rate which is lower than the first rate so that the rate of decay of the current in the first phase substantially matches the rate of rise of the current in the second phase.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1997Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Assignee: Lucas Industries public limited companyInventor: Andrew James Stephen Williams

Patent number: 5663713Abstract: A control system comprises a controller for controlling an actuator, for instance of an electrically power assisted vehicle steering system. An unstable circuit, such as first and second cascade connected integrators has an input connected to the controller and an output connected to a detector, which signals an error when the output signal of the unstable circuit is outside an acceptable range. During normal operation, the controller supplies a signal to the unstable circuit such that its output signal remains within the acceptable range. The error signal may be used to disable the actuator, for instance so as to remove power assistance from steering system.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1995Date of Patent: September 2, 1997Assignee: Lucas Industries Public Limited CompanyInventors: John Michael Ironside, Andrew James Stephen Williams, Brian Graham Nicholson, Russel Wilson-Jones, Clive Roger Sainsbury
