  • Patent number: 11808978
Abstract: Methods for post-fabrication trimming of a silicon ring resonator are disclosed. Methods include fabricating a heating element, positioned within 2 microns of the silicon ring resonator, subjecting the silicon ring resonator to energetic ion implantation, and annealing the silicon ring resonator, using the heating element. The energetic ion implantation shifts a resonance of the silicon ring resonator towards the red side of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The annealing shifts the resonance of the silicon ring resonator towards the blue side of the electro-magnetic spectrum.

Abstract: A nuclear power plant has a nuclear reactor including a reactor pressure vessel which houses plural fuel rods containing fissile material. The nuclear power plant further has means for submerging the reactor pressure vessel in water and thereby water-cooling the reactor pressure vessel in the event of an emergency requiring cooling of the nuclear reactor. The nuclear power plant further has a primary core catcher outwardly of the reactor pressure vessel, the primary core catcher being formed of a material suitable for retaining molten corium in the event corium escapes the reactor pressure vessel The nuclear power plant further has secondary core catcher outwardly of the primary core catcher, the secondary core catcher lining a tank which is water-filled in normal use of the plant to submerge and thereby water-cool the primary core catcher. The secondary core catcher is also is formed of a material suitable for retaining molten corium in the event corium escapes the primary core catcher.

  • Publication number: 20230268088
Abstract: A nuclear reactor is provided. The reactor includes a reactor pressure vessel housing plural fuel rods containing fissile material, the reactor pressure vessel having an upper, removable, vessel head. The reactor further includes control rods, each made of a neutron-absorbing material. The control rods are inserted into the reactor through the vessel head and between the fuel rods to control the rate of the fuel rods' fission reaction. The control rods are movable over a normal range of insertion positions relative to the vessel head to control the power output of the reactor when it is critical and generating useful power, and to put the reactor in a sub-critical shutdown state. The reactor further includes control rod drive mechanisms carried by the vessel head and operable to drive the movements of the control rods.

  • Publication number: 20220337021
Abstract: Hybrid silicon devices are disclosed in which a silicon-based resonant structure is coated with a rare-earth-doped tellurium oxide layer that facilitates optical gain, thereby forming a silicon-based laser cavity. The silicon-based laser cavity supports at least one resonant mode that has a modal volume extending from the silicon resonant base structure into the rare-earth-doped tellurium oxide layer. The silicon-based laser cavity is optically coupled to a silicon waveguide to facilitate the delivery of pump laser energy to the silicon-based laser cavity, such that at least a portion of the pump laser energy propagating through the silicon waveguide is coupled to the silicon-based laser cavity for excitation of the rare earth dopant within the rare-earth-doped tellurium oxide layer. The silicon waveguide that is optically coupled to the silicon-based laser cavity also facilitates the external delivery of the laser energy generated within silicon-based laser cavity.

  • Patent number: 10468849
Abstract: In various example embodiments, hybrid waveguide devices are disclosed based on a silicon nitride waveguide conformally coated with a tellurium oxide layer. A tellurium oxide layer is deposited over a silicon nitride waveguide such that the tellurium oxide layer forms a conformal layer that inherits the underlying shape of the silicon nitride waveguide, thereby forming a conformal raised region above the silicon nitride waveguide, while also forming planar regions that extend laterally from the silicon nitride waveguide. The present example hybrid waveguide structures enable the formation of a guided single mode that extends from the raised region of the tellurium oxide layer that resides above the silicon nitride waveguide into the silicon nitride waveguide, and the dimensions of the structure may be selected such that a majority of the optical mode is confined within the tellurium oxide layer, at least over a portion of the infrared region.

  • Patent number: 9831360
Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure provide devices and methods involving the thermal stabilization of microring resonators, such as microring modulators. Power is measured via an on-chip photodetector integrated with a drop port of the microring resonator, providing a local measurement of average power. This average power is employed as a feedback measure to actively control a heater that is integrated with the microring resonator, in order to stabilize the resonant wavelength of the microring resonator in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Employing such a system, a microring modulator can maintain error-free performance under thermal fluctuations that would normally render it inoperable.
