  • Publication number: 20180129167
Abstract: Examples are disclosed herein relating to an adjustable scanning system configured to adjust light from an illumination source on a per-pixel basis. One example provides an optical system including an array of light sources, a holographic light processing stage comprising, for each light source in the array, one or more holograms configured to receive light from the light source and diffract the light, the one or more holograms being selective for a property of the light that varies based upon the light source from which the light is received, and a scanning optical element configured to receive and scan the light from the holographic light processing stage.

  • Publication number: 20180120563
Abstract: Examples are disclosed that relate to a near-eye display device including a holographic display system. The holographic display system includes a light source configured to emit light that is converging or diverging, a waveguide configured to be positioned in a field of view of a user's eye, and a digital dynamic hologram configured to receive the light, and project the light into the waveguide such that the light propagates through the waveguide.

  • Publication number: 20180081322
Abstract: A head-mounted display device comprises a rendering engine configured to generate a hologram representative of a three-dimensional object. The hologram includes depth information that causes the three-dimensional object to be rendered with a focus that is determined by the depth information. The device also includes a spatial light modulator that modulates light from a light source as indicated by the hologram. A switchable hologram comprises multiple stacked switchable gratings. Each of the stacked switchable gratings is associated with one or more resulting exit pupil locations on a viewing surface. The system also comprises an eye tracker configured to map a viewing direction of a user's eye to a viewing location on the viewing surface. A processor is configured to activate a particular switchable grating within the switchable transmission hologram that is associated with an exit pupil location that aligns with the viewing location.

  • Patent number: 9858721
Abstract: The subject matter described herein includes systems, methods, and computer readable media for generating an augmented scene display. An exemplary method includes forming, using a display device operating in a first stage, an augmented virtual image by emitting light rays through a plurality of spatial light modulation layers included in a display device. The method also includes forming, using the display device operating in a second stage, an occluded real image by opening a shutter element of the display device to receive light rays from a real object and utilizing the plurality of spatial light modulation layers to block any light ray from the real object which coincides with the augmented virtual image. The method further includes generating an augmented scene display that includes both the occluded real image and the augmented virtual image by alternating the operation of the display device between the first stage and the second stage.

  • Publication number: 20170154464
Abstract: A multi-optical surface optical design for generating multiple focal planes with identical image data displayed at substantially the same time to generate the perception of varying focal depths is described. The multi-optical surface optical design can include a device comprising reflective optical surfaces that can be arranged on top of one another and configured to generate multiple focal planes and an image source for projecting image data onto the reflective optical surfaces. The technologies described can cause image data to be rendered in a focal plane corresponding to a desired focal distance and multiple copies of the image can be perceived in other focal planes of the multiple focal planes at substantially the same time as the image data is rendered in the focal plane. Each copy of the multiple copies can be presented with a perceived degree of sharpness such that each copy is out-of-focus.
