    Abstract: A non-aqueous dispersion for modifying alkyd-containing coating formulations and a method for manufacturing the non-aqueous dispersion are provided. The non-aqueous dispersion contains from about 10 to about 60 parts by weight of a low molecular weight solution polymer, having a selected glass transition temperature greater than about -10.degree. C., and from about 90 to about 40 parts by weight of a polymer which is insoluble in the non-aqueous medium, and where the soluble polymer is attached to or adsorbed onto the insoluble polymer particles. The non-aqueous dispersion is preferably prepared by dispersion polymerization to form the insoluble polymer in a non-aqueous medium in the presence of the soluble polymer.

    Abstract: A thickened organic solvent based system, particularly an aliphatic hydrocarbon-based liquid composition, such as an ink, the polymeric thickener therefor, a method of making the thickener by emulsion polymerization, and methods of using the thickener are disclosed. The thickener is an addition polymer of ethylenically unsaturated (A) hydrophobic monomers being within the hydrogen bonding class of from moderate to poor and (B) hydrophilic monomers being in the strong hydrogen bonding class in a weight ratio of hydrophobic: hydrophilic monomer between about 99.1:0.1 and 90:10, at least about 60% of the hydrophobic monomer(s) (A) are those whose homopolymers have a solubility parameter of .ltoreq.8.8, any other hydrophobic monomer(s) being such as to not destroy the organic solvent solubility of the polymer. The hydrophilic monomer(s) (B) preferably comprise at least a predominant proportion of monomers containing at least one of a carboxylic acid group and a sulfonic acid group.

    Abstract: The application discloses a mixture of high molecular weight hard resins, such as polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose acetate butyrate and cellulose nitrate with low molecular weight benzoic acid terminated polyesters having a glass transition temperature in the range of -30.degree. C. to 40.degree. C. and a molecular weight in the range of 500 to 1500. The hard polyesters of this invention are obtained by the use of small diols and hard dibasic acids in addition to termination of the chain by the hardening component benzoic acid. Saturated linear dicarboxylic acids are used for less than half of the acid monomer content, on a molar basis, since these are softening components. The polyesters are used to lower the melting point and improve the flow of the high molecular weight polymers without excessively plasticizing these high molecular weight polymers to the point where they are noticeably softened at use temperatures.

    Abstract: The application discloses a mixture of high molecular weight hard resins such as polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose acetate butyrate, and cellulose nitrate containing a minor proportion of a very viscous or solid oligomer of one or more vinyl monomers such as methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, isopropyl methacrylate, tertiary butyl methacrylate, isobutyl methacrylate, or tertiary butyl acrylate, which monomers when polymerized give a polymer which has a glass transition temperature calculated by the formula used for high molecular weight polymers to be at least 30.degree. C., and preferably at least 50.degree. C. The oligomers have a number averaging chain length of 4 to 25 mers. They have a narrow molecular weight distribution such that the ratio of the weight average molecular weight to the number average molecular weight is 2 or less, preferably less than 1.5. This ratio is referred to as the heterogeneity index.
