Publication number: 20200109030Abstract: A holder structure fixed to an elevator car of an elevator is configured to hold a passenger's smart mobile device. The mobile device includes sensors, and the holder structure releasably mechanically couples the mobile device to the elevator car. A method for monitoring an operation of the elevator includes providing the mobile device with a specific application software controlling the mobile device to execute the following monitoring procedure: repeatedly supervising measurement values of at least one of the sensors; upon occurrence of a specific parameter pattern in the measurement values, starting a measurement acquisition procedure during which measurement values are sensed by at least one of the sensors and the sensed measurement values are transmitted to an evaluation unit for further evaluation. The specific parameter pattern specifically results upon the mobile device being held in at least one of a predefined position and a predefined orientation in the elevator car.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 19, 2018Publication date: April 9, 2020Inventors: Zack Zhu, Martin Kusserow, Andrew Paice, Heinz Widmer, Raphael Zimmermann

Patent number: 10173862Abstract: A process for operating an elevator control device, whereby for local access to the elevator control device via a programming device, the elevator control device automatically sends an identifier to the programming device and the identifier is input to an operator panel associated with the elevator control device. The elevator control device permits the local access when the previously sent identifier has been entered correctly within a predetermined input time.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2014Date of Patent: January 8, 2019Assignee: INVENTIO AGInventors: Claudio Colombano, Adrian Bünter, Andrew Paice, Philipp Lüthi, Thomas Räber

Patent number: 8543246Abstract: The present disclosure is concerned with controlling distributing of electrical power in a power distribution region. To effectively control the distribution of power in the distribution region, the substation of the region is provided with a distribution controller or Intelligent Substation Control System (ISCS). The distribution controller is connected to various process devices, which in turn are connected to primary devices of the region. The process devices send data corresponding to the primary devices to the distribution controller, and the distribution controller includes a processor which proposes a set of actions based on the received data. Further, the distribution controller includes a coordinating device which selects the final action from the set of proposed actions. The final action is implemented on the primary devices of the distribution region.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2008Date of Patent: September 24, 2013Assignee: ABB Research Ltd.Inventors: Cherry Yuen, Andrew Paice, Mats Larsson, Christian Frei

Patent number: 8493030Abstract: The present disclosure is concerned with operation of an energy storage system (ESS) connectable to an electric power system. The charging-discharging schedule of the ESS can be determined through application of a time-dependent forecast of ESS and power system states based on historical data. Exemplary embodiments can include ESSs which have been historically activated with a certain periodicity, for example, for power system load leveling, frequency regulation, arbitrage, peak load shaving and/or integration of renewable power generation.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 2009Date of Patent: July 23, 2013Assignee: ABB Research LtdInventors: Andrew Paice, Alexandre Oudalov, Thomas von Hoff

Publication number: 20040083011Abstract: In a control system (11) for controlling an apparatus and/or a process (10), said control system (11) being based on a finite state machine defined by a finite number of states Si (i∈{1, . . . ,n}=:S), exactly one of which said finite state machine may reside in at any given time, and for at least one first state Sk, a number Nk,l of allowed transitions tk,l(m) to at least one second state S1, with k, l∈S, m=1, . . . ,Nk,l, information made available to an operator is enhanced by a graphical representation of the finite state machine that the control system (11) is configured to produce, and that comprises at least two states S&agr; and S107 and at least one allowed transition between said two states S&agr; and S&ohgr;.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 21, 2003Publication date: April 29, 2004Applicant: ABB Schweiz AGInventors: Christopher Ganz, Andrew Paice

Patent number: 6406268Abstract: A controller for a compressor determines a characteristic variable for an overall flow to be supplied, and generates on the basis of this characteristic variable, by means of static functions, a first setpoint value for a row of inlet guide vanes or an inlet valve or a rotational speed of the compressor and a second setpoint value for a return valve. In a preferred embodiment of the subject-matter of the invention, the overall flow is set in a normal operating range by variation of the first setpoint value, and when a safety limit lying before a surge limit is exceeded is set by variation of the second setpoint value. Advantageously, the overall flow thereby changes continuously during the transition between these operating ranges. The simple controller dynamics also mean that the dynamics of the compressor unit are not further complicated, and the control system remains simple to design, put into operation and maintain.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2000Date of Patent: June 18, 2002Assignee: ABB Research Ltd.Inventor: Andrew Paice

Patent number: 6357450Abstract: A hair dye applicator for mixing dye gel and peroxide as needed. The hair dye applicator includes a housing having a top wall, a bottom wall, a front wall, a back wall and a pair of lateral side walls. A cartridge comprises a first tubular member and a second tubular member coupled together. Each of the tubular members has an open first end and a closed second end. Each of the second ends of the tubular member has a hole extending therein. An annular lip is integrally coupled to the second end and encompasses the holes in the second end. Dye gel is positioned in one of the tubular members and peroxide activator is positioned in the other of the tubular members. A coupling member removably couples the first end of the cartridge to the front wall of the housing. A generally hollow rod and has open first and second ends. A bracket member releasably secures the first end of the rod to the second end of the cartridge. The second end of the rod extends into and is fluidly coupled to a manifold.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2000Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Inventor: Andrew Paice
