  • Patent number: 6420578
Abstract: A process for recovering 18-methyl eicosanoic acid (18-MEA) and/or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) from woolwax acids or derivatives thereof comprises the steps of heating the woolwax acids or derivatives thereof to 100 to 230° C. to form estolides and polymeric species; distilling to obtain a distillate (D1) and a residue (R1); and recovering 18-MEA from the distillate and/or recovering AHAs from the residue.

  • Patent number: 6419544
Abstract: A battery operated gyroscopic entertainment device is powered from a mating cradle, or from a battery supply within the device. The device includes an egg-shaped housing in which is disposed a high speed DC motor whose motor shaft preferably extends from each end of the motor. A hub member is attached to each shaft end, and a weighted belt is attached to each hub member. A central portion of the motor housing is fixedly attached to the device housing such that upon application of operating potential to the motor, the motor shaft, and the weighted hub members rotate at high speed, which imparts a gyroscopic action to the device. A cradle may be provided containing a power source, with power connections that mate to the device housing when the housing is placed within the cradle.

  • Patent number: 6016241
Abstract: A heterogeneous thin film structure including a discontinuous layer of ferromagnetic material deposited on an insulating substrate and overcoated with a layer of nonmagnetic electrically conductive material exhibits giant magnetoresistance in saturation fields on the order of 350 Oersteds. A layer of ferromagnetic material is deposited on a heated insulating substrate by high vacuum evaporation techniques to form a layer of isolated ferromagnetic particles and overcoated with a nonmagnetic conductive material to form a plurality of ferromagnetic particles embedded in a nonmagnetic conductive matrix. As the ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic materials are deposited separately, it is not required that the two materials be immiscible and subsequent annealing is not required to induce phase separation.

  • Patent number: 5989728
Abstract: An alloy of tetragonal polycrystalline structure acts as a thin film magnetic medium. The medium can be for recording or sensing magnetic transitions representative of data and is of a thickness less than about 200 .ANG., and has a coercivity in excess of about 2000 Oe. The film is in the L1o phase which is suitable for longitudinal recording and can be constituted by an alloy selected from cobalt or iron together with platinum or palladium. The film is formed by sputtering from a target and thereafter annealing the thin film and at a temperature in excess of about 500.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 5035061
Abstract: This invention provides a guide for hand held power tools for use in cutting sheet material and the like, comprising a T-square having a straight edge adapted to abut the edge of sheet material and an arm extending normal thereto across the sheet material having a hinged base plate capable of being fastened at adjustable locations along the arm at measured dimensions from the straight edge. Power tools, such as circular saws or routers, may be mounted on the base plate which is pivotal between a raised position in which the power tool is out of engagement with the sheet material and a lower position in which the cutting tool engages the material.
