  • Publication number: 20030034597
Abstract: Passive shock filtering apparatus that filters shock waves experienced by structural systems, such as spacecraft and its structures and components, for example. The shock filtering apparatus reflects energy back to a shock source, and generally reflects a propagating shock wave within the boundary of the apparatus. In general, the apparatus comprises a member disposed adjacent to the shock source that has a plurality of slots disposed therethrough that are configured to reflect energy back to the shock source. The plurality of slots typically comprise a set of partially-overlapping slots formed through the member. The apparatus may further comprise a reinforcing layer of material affixed to the member that has slots that overlay and match the slots the formed through the member. The apparatus may have a cylindrical or rectangular cross section and may include a raised rim disposed around the periphery thereof.

  • Publication number: 20030009975
Abstract: An improved bracket-like structural member designed to improve structures where a rigid space frame can fulfill a structural purpose. An exemplary structural member comprises two straight tubes that each comprise a graphite fiber wrapped foam cylinder, and a curved tube that comprises a graphite fiber wrapped foam arc segment whose distal ends abut an end of each straight tube. Graphite fiber cloth overlaps interfaces between the curved tubes and the straight tube. A strut interconnects adjacent ends of the straight tubes. The present invention is readily applicable to more than two elements terminating at a joint.

  • Patent number: 6448943
Abstract: An antenna system and improved antenna support structure that is preferably used on a spacecraft. An exemplary antenna system comprises an antenna dish, an antenna positioning mechanism, and the present antenna support structure coupled between the antenna dish and antenna positioning mechanism. The antenna support structure comprises a composite ring attached to a rear surface of the antenna dish and a boom structure coupled to the composite ring and to the antenna positioning mechanism that comprises a plurality of tubular fingers that interconnect the composite ring and the antenna positioning mechanism. The boom structure may further comprise one or more lateral supports that interconnect the plurality of tubular fingers. The composite ring is preferably disposed in a plane containing the center of gravity of the antenna dish. The composite ring, tubular fingers, and lateral supports preferably comprise graphite fibers.
