Abstract: The present invention provides a system, method and computer program for energy use management and reduction. The invention enables managing and reducing energy usage by monitoring energy usage of users and rewarding users for reducing energy usage. It includes monitoring energy consumption for users. Any reduction in energy consumption is commoditized. The commoditized energy can be sold on a market. Some or all of the revenues realized from the sale may be distributed to the users as encouragement to further reduce energy usage.

Abstract: Systems and method for the management of biomarkers or biomarker associations subject to restricted access, such as by licensing fees, are provided. A license manager maintains license fee information on a number of biomarkers or biomarker associations. In one embodiment, a user may submit biological data for testing against one or more of the maintained biomarkers. The license manager determines which positive test results require use of licensed biomarkers or biomarker associations and may present this information to the user. In another embodiment, a set of biomarkers or biomarker associations may be submitted to determine if any biomarkers subject to license are included. The licensing manager determines whether licenses exist for included biomarkers and may return specific licensing information.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a sample collection device for an aqueous fluid, such as whole blood, serum, plasma and urine. The device comprises a cartridge body defining an elongate sample collection passage that has open ends. The passage is arranged to draw the fluid into the passage by capillary action. The passage is provided along a portion of its length with a sample metering stop in the form of a hydrophobic coating arranged to prevent flow of the fluid by capillary action thereacross. A sample receiving portion of the passage extending between a collection end and the metering stop is non-linear, and preferably defines a pair of straight limbs connected by a bend. By providing a non-linear passage in this way, the maximum gravitational force which can act on the collected sample is reduced as compared to a conventional linear passage, thereby reducing the tendency of the sample to leak from the device and potentially avoiding the need for one or both ends of the passage to be sealed.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is an analysis device for use with an external testing apparatus to detect the presence of an analyte in a test sample. The device comprises a transducer formed of a layer of pyroelectric or piezoelectric material sandwiched between first and second electrode layers, the transducer being arranged to produce an electrical voltage across the electrode layers in response to heating or straining of the pyroelectric or piezoelectric material layer. The device also comprises first and second stiffening elements for the transducer, the transducer being sandwiched between the stiffening elements. Each of the stiffening elements defines a planar surface for maintaining the transducer in a flat condition. Each of the stiffening elements exposes a portion of a respective electrode layer of the transducer for electrically connecting the transducer to the external text apparatus.

Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention pertain to x-ray absorbing compositions that comprise a carbon material associated with an x-ray absorbing material. In some embodiments, the x-ray absorbing material is selected from the group consisting of lead-based compounds, bismuth-based compounds, and combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the carbon material is selected from the group consisting of carbon nanotubes, graphenes, carbon fibers, amorphous carbons, and combinations thereof. In further embodiments, the carbon materials of the present invention may also be treated with a surfactant, an acid, polymers or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the carbon materials of the present invention may be further associated with a metal oxide. Additional embodiments of the present invention pertain to methods of making the aforementioned x-ray absorbing compositions. Such methods generally include associating a carbon material with an x-ray absorbing material.

Abstract: A system incorporating techniques described in this paper includes a shared session server system that enables clients to view and interact with content simultaneously. The system enables a first shared session client to send an event stream sufficient to depict results of interaction with the content at a second shared session client.

Abstract: Vehicle and traffic data collection and processing systems and methods are disclosed. Data sampling areas may be designed and equipped with adjustable pyroelectric infrared sensors, a camera, and a network interface card that may be used to monitor and transmit traffic data. The traffic data may be used to provide instantaneous reporting of traffic speeds and even speed violations to municipal traffic control systems but should improve city wide traffic condition communications for overall reduced drive times, improved fuel usage and reduced carbon emissions from vehicular traffic.

In general, rows of an index may be associated with validity flags that indicate whether a row has been updated with an update inserted in a delta index; one scheme for value identifiers may be used for an index and another scheme for one or more delta indexes where all of the indexes are, to at least some extent, compressed according to dictionary-based compression; and multiple delta indexes may be used in alternation such that one delta index may accept updates while another is being updated. The delta indexes may also have validity flags and all updates, such as modifications of values, deletion of records, and inserting of new records may be handled as updates accepted by one or more delta indexes.

Abstract: Systems and methods for inputting configuration and network authorization information into a media device such that the media device may interface with media content providers and wireless networks. A service center collects configuration and network authorization information for a media device and generates a configuration module based thereon. The configuration module is then converted into the form of barcode which is provided to a media device capable of reading a barcode. The media device decodes the barcode and extracts the configuration module. The extracted configuration module is installed on the media device, configuring the device to access predetermined media content providers and/or wireless networks.

Abstract: Providing content to a device. Content stored on a device can be examined or searched based on the programming of channels that are available to the device over various networks. The content can be searched using other rules related to user preferences or content characteristics. Based on the results of the examination of the content, playlists are generated. Each playlist includes content from the device that matches or partially matches the content associated with one of the channels. Using the playlists, a user can load content from their device that has a theme consistent with a particular channel. When signal loss is detected for a given channel, the playlist associated with that channel can be loaded and played by the device. The device can resume playing the channel when the signal is again adequately detected.

Abstract: In business systems, one or more methods can be used to reduce an amount of redundant data. In one implementation, a method to reduce redundancy within a data model in a database, in which the data model is represented by at least one table, includes determining a number of distinct values of partial keys in a table. Each partial key represents at least one row in the table. The method includes reordering one or more columns of the table by cardinality of partial keys, in which the cardinality of a partial key represents a number of distinct values of the partial key. The method further includes determining whether pairs of partial keys are functionally dependent and eliminating one or more columns having functional dependencies from the table.

Abstract: A method and system for locking down a local machine zone associated with a network browser is provided. Placing the local machine zone in a lockdown mode provides stricter security settings that are applied to active content attempting to publish within a local page open in the network browser. The stricter setting are provided in a new set of registry keys that correspond to the lockdown mode of the local machine zone. The original security settings remain unchanged so that other systems and applications functionality that depends on the original security settings remains unaffected for the local machine zone. A user may also selectively allow active content to render despite the local machine zone being locked down.

In general, a number representing an amount of occurrences of a frequently occurring value in a group of adjacent rows of a column is generated, a vector representing whether the frequently occurring value exists in a row of the column is generated, and the number and the vector are stored to enable searches of the data represented by the number and the vector. The vector may omit a portion representing the group of adjacent rows. The values may be dictionary-based compression values representing business data such as business objects. The compression may be performed in-memory, in parallel, to improve memory utilization, network bandwidth consumption, and processing performance.
