  • Publication number: 20040147909
Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises a probe (3) including an elongate hollow outer member (14) having a cutting window (16) at its distal end portion. An elongate drive shaft (15) is disposed within the outer member (14) and is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis within the probe. A cutting tool (17) is located at the distal end of the drive shaft, and is positioned adjacent to the cutting window (16). An indicia in the form of an etched marking (18) runs proximally along the outer member (14) in alignment with the center of the cutting window (16). The indicia allows the user of the instrument to ascertain the position of the cutting window (16), whatever the orientation of the probe (3).

  • Patent number: 6642669
Abstract: The operating frequency of a ballast is sufficiently far from resonance that, when a compact fluorescent lamp is dimmed to about one percent light output level, the ballast is operating with an open loop gain below a predetermined level, such as, for example, 15, and is operating with an output impedance greater than a predetermined level, such as, for example, the absolute value of the maximum negative incremental impedance of the lamp, and more preferably, greater than twice the absolute value of the maximum negative incremental impedance of the lamp. By changing the frequency to 85 kHz from 80 kHz, for example, the gain is maintained about the same whether the light output is at five percent or one percent, for example. This provides a stable control loop. In this manner, compact fluorescent lamps can be dimmed below about one percent light output, without dropping out and without observable flicker.

  • Publication number: 20030181934
Abstract: A powered surgical apparatus can be used with a source of irrigation fluid and a source of suction. The powered surgical apparatus can include a cutting blade assembly and a handle. The handle can include an upper portion defining a distal section connectable to the cutting blade assembly and a lower portion extending downwardly from the upper portion. The handle can be connectable to the source of irrigation fluid and the source of suction. The system can also include a manually actuable input device that provides at least one signal relevant to at least one operation of the system, and a controller that receives the at least one input signal and provides an output signal to perform the at least one operation of the system.

  • Patent number: 6611537
Abstract: A network adapter for a synchronous logical ring network operates on existing physical twisted-pair telephone topologies. Information propagates around the logical ring, reaching every device on each revolution around the network. Network devices are full-duplex, transmitting and receiving information on every clock cycle. Network devices arbitrate to be elected the network clock device. By synchronizing all network devices to a single reference clock, and providing fixed frames of information propagating around the network at consistent time intervals, the logical ring network ensures that information propagates from one device to another at consistent time intervals. The fixed-length frames are divided into two independent streams: a data stream for the distribution of real-time continuous digital media streams; and a system command stream for the distribution of system commands.

  • Patent number: 6340117
Abstract: An element which can be plugged into an electronic data processing (EDP) device, for receiving a user card which is equipped with components, including at least one of a processor and/or data memory, a frame having an exterior form, which is designed to accommodate the user card, a first interface for transferring data between the element and the EDP device, and a second interface formed by contacts on the user card and on the frame, for transferring data to and from the user card. The exterior form of the frame is that of a diskette so that it can be inserted into a diskette station of an EDP device. The first interface between the element and the EDP device is designed in a standard fashion, so that data can be transferred using a standard read/write device already present in the diskette station of the EDP device.
