  • Patent number: 10283999
Abstract: An information handling system (IHS) includes a base station that has a transmitter coil to generate a magnetic field for charging a portable power source of a battery-powered electronic device. A receiver coil magnetically receives power from the transmitter coil of the base station. A power control module connected to the portable power source and the receiver coil charges the portable power source with the received power. A flexible ferrite shield is positioned on a side of the receiver coil opposite to the transmitter coil to shield the IHS electronics. A pneumatic diaphragm is formed by a portion of the flexible ferrite shield that is positioned for oscillating movement into a center cavity of the receiver coil. • Publication number: 20130278614
Abstract: Information presented as images at a display are provided by a panel self-refresh module of the display instead of a graphics system, with the panel self-refresh module using a reduced refresh rate of the image to reduce power consumption. During a panel self-refresh mode, brightness of an image presented at the display is managed locally at the display to support power down of a graphics system interfaced with the display.

  • Publication number: 20090291597
Abstract: A plug to couple an external device to, and power the external device from, an information handling system includes first contacts conforming to a first industry standard. The first contacts include a first power contact adapted to conduct a first power signal from the information handling system to the external device. The plug also includes second contacts conforming to a second industry standard different from the first industry standard. The second contacts are designed to conduct no more than one second power signal from the information handling system to the external device. In a particular embodiment, the first contacts conform to a USB standard, and the second contacts conform to a non-USB standard.

  • Publication number: 20070168763
Abstract: Information handling system errors are presented at a display with the information handling system graphics subsystem inoperative by communicating an identified error to the display through an auxiliary channel and generating a presentation of the error information with a microcontroller of the display. For example, errors determined by BIOS firmware running on a chipset are communicated through a DDC or I2C channel from the chipset to the display so that textual error messages are generated at the display without the use of the information handling system's graphic processor to generate an error message image.

  • Publication number: 20070106913
Abstract: A technique is disclosed for utilizing power provided from a data communication line for operation of an information handling system. The power from the data communication line may be utilized even when the information handling system being powered requires more power than is available from the data communication line. More particularly, power management techniques are provided that couples the power from a data communication line to the power systems of the information handling system. The information handling system may include a plurality of power sources of which the data communication line power is just one such source. Power management circuitry identifies and characterizes the power available from the data communication line and integrates the power with the power available from other power sources. In one embodiment the data communication line may be an Ethernet connection that operates in accordance with Power Over Ethernet standards.

  • Publication number: 20070054618
Abstract: Wireless access points integrate building functions for improved building safety and reduced building wiring. A battery associated with a wireless access point is charged using power from a Power over Ethernet cable. The battery supports functions of the wireless access point and one or more building devices in the event of a power failure, the building devices communicating information through the wireless access point. For instance, emergency lighting and textual lamps are illuminated with the battery in the event of a power outage. As another example, fire sensors, fire alarms and intercoms provide emergency workers information and voice communication regarding the area within the proximity of a wireless access point to aid in rescue or fire fighting efforts.

  • Publication number: 20060276988
Abstract: A clock diagnostics module, such as a state machine, integrated into an integrated clock controller monitors clock signals associated with the integrated clock controller and reports the status of the clock signals through a management bus, such as an SMBus. For instance, a counter integrated into the integrated clock controller counts clock signal cycles that occur in a management bus cycle and compares the clock signal with an expected value to determine the accuracy of the clock. A power on reset allows the management bus to read the clock diagnostics module in the event of clock controller failure.

  • Publication number: 20060277401
Abstract: Interoperable firmware for an information handling system supports embedded controller and chipset operations from a common SPI flash ROM. The embedded controller is disposed between the chipset and the flash ROM with a pass through port integrated in the embedded controller selectively providing primary access to firmware by the chipset or the embedded controller. The pass through port provides chipset access to firmware without inducing delays for normal system operations, yet provides an integrated switch for control and access of the firmware by the embedded controller for updating of firmware settings and firmware diagnostics. Application of power to the embedded controller allows access to chipset firmware even where the chipset lacks power, such as during manufacture of the information handling system.

  • Publication number: 20060274023
Abstract: An information handling system inverter powers a display backlight at variable brightness levels determined by a brightness module integrated in the inverter. The brightness module sums a user interface setting, automated brightness setting and ambient light sensor measurement input into the inverter to determine the inverter power output, thus simplifying the integration of user brightness settings with automated brightness adjustments, such as DPST adjustments. A brightness range register holds maximum and minimum brightness settings for output by the brightness module. A calibration register holds a calibration brightness setting for calibration of display brightness.

  • Publication number: 20060108982
Abstract: In a method and system for protecting a battery being charged by an electrical device, a current flowing through a cell stack of the battery is measured. If the measured current is greater than a predefined value the battery is isolated from the device. If subsequent current measurements made within a predefined time interval indicate that the measured current is less than or equal to the predefined value then the battery is recoupled to the device. If the measured current remains greater than the predefined value during the predefined time interval then a fuse is blown and the battery is disabled.
