  • Publication number: 20210393348
Abstract: A robotic surgical tool includes a drive housing having first and second ends, a carriage movably mounted to the drive housing, and a shaft extending from the carriage and penetrating the first end, the shaft having an end effector arranged at a distal end. An activating mechanism is secured to the carriage and includes a transmission link pivotably coupled to the carriage, a transmission drive gear rotatably mounted to a transmission link, a drive gear rotatably mounted to the carriage and operatively coupled to the transmission drive gear, and a transmission driven gear rotatably mounted to the transmission link and driven by rotation of the transmission drive gear. The transmission link is pivotable between a first and second positions to actuate the activating mechanism to perform first and second functions, respectively, of the end effector.

  • Publication number: 20210393345
Abstract: A robotic surgical tool includes a drive housing having a first end, a second end, and a lead screw extending between the first and second ends, a carriage movably mounted to the lead screw at a carriage nut secured to the carriage, and an elongate shaft extending from the carriage and extending through the first end, the shaft having an end effector arranged at a distal end thereof. Rotation of the lead screw moves the carriage and the carriage nut axially between the first and second ends and thereby moves the end effector distally or proximally.

  • Publication number: 20210393346
Abstract: A surgical tool includes a handle having a first end and a second end, a lead screw rotatably coupled to the handle and extending between the first and second ends, and a spline rotatably coupled to the handle and extending between the first and second ends. The spline is arranged at a distance from the lead screw such that the lead screw assumes torsional loading generated by the spline. A surgical tool with first and second splines with a first activating mechanism supported by the carriage and coupled to the first spline and a second activating mechanism supported by the carriage and coupled to the second spline may balance a first torsional load generated by the first spline rotating in a first direction with a second torsional load generated by the second spline rotating in a second direction opposite the first direction.

  • Publication number: 20210393354
Abstract: A robotic surgical tool includes a drive housing having first and second ends, at least one spline extending between the first and second ends and including a drive gear that rotates with rotation of the spline, and a carriage mounted to the spline. A closure tube extends from the carriage through the first end and has an end effector arranged at a distal end. An activating mechanism is housed in the carriage and includes a driven gear coupled to the drive gear such that rotation of the drive gear rotates the driven gear, and a carrier arranged at a proximal end of the closure tube and coupled to the driven gear such that rotation of the driven gear moves the carrier and the closure tube axially along a longitudinal axis of the closure tube. Moving the closure tube along the longitudinal axis closes or opens end effector jaws.

  • Patent number: 11154301
Abstract: A modular shaft assembly is disclosed. The modular shaft assembly includes one or more inputs configured to receive input motions from a surgical instrument system, such as a handle, for example. The shaft assembly further includes one or more on-board inputs configured to generate input motions. The input motions received and generated by the shaft assembly are transferrable to an end effector of the shaft assembly to perform various functions at the end effector. The end effector can include a staple cartridge and a firing member which is movable between a proximal position and a distal position to eject staples from the staple cartridge. The end effector can include a plurality of jaw members and the firing member can comprise camming members which are configured to position the jaw members relative to one another.

  • Patent number: 10617412
Abstract: A surgical instrument system can include an end effector and a staple cartridge which is removably insertable into the end effector. The staple cartridge includes a sled movable from an unfired position to a fired position to eject staples removably stored in the staple cartridge. In various instances, the sled can be inadvertently advanced from its unfired position when the staple cartridge is positioned in the end effector, for example. The surgical instrument system further comprises one or more sensors configured to detect whether the sled is in its unfired position and/or whether the staple cartridge has been mis-inserted into the end effector. The one or more sensors can also determine whether the staple cartridge has been fully seated in the cartridge channel.
