  • Publication number: 20140240921
Abstract: Thermal energy exposed at the outer surface of an information handling system housing is managed by spreading the thermal energy across the housing X and Y axes while restricting heat transfer from the housing at the Z axis. For example, a graphene outer surface couples to an aerogel substrate strengthened by a carbon fiber laminate. The graphene spreads thermal energy that escapes through the housing across the housing outer surface to limit the impact of thermal energy at any particular location, such as proximate to the location of a processor.

  • Publication number: 20140203966
Abstract: First and second antenna disposed in an information handling system selectively support communication through a wireless frequency using beamforming. The first or second antenna is selected for initiating communication based upon alignment with a beamforming axis for establishing beamforming with a distal wireless device. For example, the first antenna is selected if the information handling system articulates to a tablet configuration and the second antenna is selected if the information handling system articulates to a clamshell open configuration.

  • Patent number: 8745423
Abstract: An information handling system includes a module bay, a voltage control switch, and a controller. The module bay configured to receive a module, and to connect the module to the information handling system. The voltage control switch is in communication with the module bay, and is configured to provide power to the module bay. The controller is in communication with the module bay and with the voltage control switch. The controller is configured to detect a type of the module connected to the module bay, and to send a power control override signal to the voltage control switch when the type is a specific type, wherein the power control override signal causes the voltage control switch to disregard a power down signal received for the module bay and continue to provide power to the module bay.

  • Publication number: 20140146061
Abstract: A method for managing wireless data communication links includes establishing first and second wireless data communication links between a host system and a wireless display adapter. The first wireless data communication link is associated with a high data rate of data traffic between the host system and the wireless display adapter, and the second wireless data communication link is associated with a low data rate of data traffic. The method further includes determining that information is to be transmitted between the host system and the wireless display adapter using the low data rate, turning off a first data radio associated with the first wireless data communication link, and transmitting the information over the second wireless data communication link.

  • Publication number: 20140095899
Abstract: An information handling system provides power to a peripheral though a peripheral interface, such as a USB interface, by communicating power availability with a primary set of power parameters through a data link and communicating power availability with a secondary set of power parameters through a power link. If a peripheral device has the capability to draw power at the second power parameters, it does so while monitoring for a fold back of host power that indicates power is not available at the second power parameters.

  • Publication number: 20140068310
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for implementing a persistent battery system shutdown condition when a battery pack voltage level drops below a predetermined minimum acceptable operating voltage threshold that is above a pre-determined permanent failure operating voltage threshold at which the battery pack is permanently disabled. The disclosed systems and methods may be implemented such that shutdown portion of the power-consuming components of the information handling system are not allowed to be restarted until external power has been first provided and applied to at least partially recharge the battery cells of the battery pack to a battery voltage level that is above the minimum acceptable operating voltage threshold and/or when sufficient external power is applied to power the information handling system and at the same time charge the battery cells of the battery pack.

  • Patent number: 8656193
Abstract: An information handling system can receive power from a wireless or wired power source. In response to determining the information handling system is coupled to the wired power source, the system decouples the wireless power source from providing power.
