Publication number: 20050282668Abstract: A motorized tensioner that is controllable for adjusting a belt tension. The tensioner comprises a tensioner arm and a spring. One end of the spring is connected to a moveable member that is connected to a gearbox driven by an electric motor, whereby a spring position is adjustable. The other spring end is connected to a damping mechanism, which is in turn engaged with the tensioner arm. The motor and gearbox position the moveable member, and thereby a spring end, according to a control signal received from a controller. The spring end position determines the spring force and thereby the belt tension in the system. The damping mechanism frictionally interacts with a tensioner body to damp oscillatory movements of the tensioner arm.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 22, 2004Publication date: December 22, 2005Inventors: Imtiaz Ali, Andrzej Dec, Alexander Serkh

Patent number: 6702266Abstract: A damping strut. An inner damping member is axially engaged with an outer housing. The outer housing is connectable to a tensioner arm. A wedge member connected to an immoveable mounting member is axially engaged with an inner portion of the inner damping member. The outer housing is axially moveable relative to the wedge member. A spring bears upon and urges the outer housing away from an end cap. The end cap comprises a rod, which extends axially within the wedge member and has an end connected to the inner damping member. The rod transmits a spring load force from the end cap to the inner damping member such that the inner damping member radially expands against the outer housing in response to the spring load force, thereby creating a frictional force between the inner damping member and the outer housing which damps an outer housing movement in proportion to the spring force.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2002Date of Patent: March 9, 2004Assignee: The Gates CorporationInventor: Andrzej Dec

Patent number: 6612408Abstract: The invention comprises a frictional damping strut. The strut comprises an inner cylinder that slides within an outer casing. A spring biases the inner cylinder away from the outer casing in an axial direction. A first wedge member cooperatively engages a second wedge member. The first wedge member having a frictional engagement with the inner cylinder such that when the inner cylinder is pressed into the outer casing the first wedge member bears upon the second wedge member causing the first wedge member to radially expand, thereby increasing a frictional force between the first wedge member and the inner cylinder. A second spring preloads the first wedge member against the second wedge member. A belt tensioner may incorporate the damping strut to preload a belt and damp belt oscillations.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2001Date of Patent: September 2, 2003Assignee: The Gates CorporationInventors: Alexander Serkh, Andrzej Dec

Patent number: 6607459Abstract: A tensioner having a base. A spring connected to the base biases a plate, having a pulley, toward a belt. Frictional blocks are aligned on the base in a staggered fashion along a spring centerline. The plate slidingly moves in a linear path between the blocks. The blocks constrain the path of the plate allowing movement in only a single axis parallel to a spring axis. A hubload from a belt running on the pulley combined with the spring force acting on the plate creates a force couple acting on the plate through the frictional blocks. The engaging surfaces between the plate and the blocks have a predetermined coefficient of friction thereby creating a damping force as the pulley and plate move in a linear path on the blocks.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2001Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignee: The Gates CorporationInventors: Alexander Serkh, Ali Kanberoglu, Andrzej Dec

Patent number: 6568340Abstract: A wakeboard assembly transports a rider across a body of water. The rider defines a rider center of gravity. The wakeboard assembly includes a hull that extends between a stem and a stern. The hull defines an interior compartment and a deck for receiving the rider thereon during operation of said wakeboard assembly. An engine is mounted to the hull within the interior compartment. The engine is mounted to the hull at a position between the stem and the stern below the deck. The engine is mounted such that the engine extends through the center of gravity of the rider.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2001Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Inventors: Andrzej Dec, Piotr Dec

Publication number: 20030069098Abstract: The invention comprises a self-contained mechanical belt tensioner that produces damping which is a function of the applied hubload through the effect of frictional forces derived from the sliding action of mutually opposing wedges. A first wedge or conical piston is contained within a housing. The conical piston cooperates with a second or conical wedge. A surface of the conical wedge slides on the inner surface of the housing. The conical wedge is expandable in a direction normal to the inner surface of the housing. A spring urges the conical wedge into engagement with the conical piston. As the pulley is loaded, as with an impulse load, the piston will move into the conical wedge. This, in turn, will cause the conical wedge to expand against the inner surface of the housing. The expansion of the conical wedge in the housing will increase the frictional force between the conical wedge and the housing. This will have the effect of damping movements of the conical piston and, in turn, of the pulley.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 15, 2002Publication date: April 10, 2003Inventors: Alexander Serkh, Andrzej Dec, David Hanes

Patent number: 6192817Abstract: A powered surfboard includes a board defining a stem and a stern. An internal combustion engine is housed within the board closer to the stern than the stem. The exhaust system extends fore of the internal combustion before it bends back on itself and terminates at a position aft of the bend. This configuration acts as a valve in that, under typical operating conditions, water will not pass through the exhaust system to reach the internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine is connected to a pump which receives the force produced by the internal combustion engine to force water to pass therethrough propelling the powered surfboard forward. The pump and the internal combustion engine are connected to the same interior surface of the hull of the board to reduce the amount of misalignment therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1999Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Inventors: Andrzej Dec, Piotr Dec
