  • Publication number: 20090280936
Abstract: The invention relates to a variable belt drive. There is a need for an improved variable belt drive. A variable belt drive includes a non-rotating piston housing which forms three piston bores. A rotatable input shaft is coupled to a power source and is supported by bearings in the piston housing. A first sheave is mounted for rotation with the shaft and is fixed axially to the shaft. A second sheave is mounted for rotation with the shaft and is slidable axially on the shaft. A piston is movable in each piston bore in response to fluid pressure. A non-rotating carrier engages an end of each the pistons. A thrust bearing has an outer race fixed to the carrier and an inner race fixed to the second sheave and rotatable with the second sheave. The carrier includes an annular surface which engages an outer surface of the outer race. An O-ring is received in a groove in the annular surface and engages the outer race to resist rotation of the outer race.

  • Publication number: 20090211559
Abstract: A fuel supply circuit for a Diesel engine includes fuel injectors, a fuel tank, a main pump for delivering fuel to the injectors, and a variable flow charge pump for delivering fuel from the tank to an inlet of the main pump, and a surplus fuel line communicating unburned fuel from the injectors to an inlet of the charge pump. The circuit also includes a temperature sensor which senses a temperature of fuel discharged by the charge pump, and a pressure sensor which senses a pressure of fuel discharged by the charge pump. A bleed line communicates fuel from an outlet of the charge pump to the tank. A solenoid operated bleed valve and a pressure relief valve control flow through the bleed line. An electronic control unit controls the charge pump and the bleed valve as a function of the sensed parameters.

  • Patent number: 7481287
Abstract: A vehicle cooling package has a fan shroud mounted to a heat exchanger assembly. A diverter plate is mounted adjacent to the shroud and spaced therefrom with a fan interposed therebetween. A diverting surface of the shroud and the diverter plate are angled from the axis of the fan when the shroud and plate are assembled to the vehicle. A vehicle hood has upper and side surfaces each having air discharge apertures corresponding with the space between the diverting surface and the diverter plate when the hood is closed. The diverting surface and the diverter plate both extend fully to the hood assembly when the hood is closed. The angles of the diverting surface and the diverter plate closely match a natural discharge angle of the fan, so that air is discharged from the fan at a high velocity from under the hood through the air discharge apertures.

  • Publication number: 20080295786
Abstract: The invention relates to a variable speed fan drive. There is a need for a variable speed fan drive with fewer seals and bearings, which is operated by system hydraulic pressure, which has fewer parts and which is simpler to assemble. A variable speed fan drive is provided for a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. The fan drive has a driver variable sheave unit, a driven variable sheave unit and a belt engaging both the driver and driven variable sheave units. The driver variable sheave unit includes a driver shaft drivingly coupled to an engine output shaft, a first axially fixed half sheave mounted for rotation with the driver shaft, and a first axially movable half sheave member mounted for rotation with the driver shaft and movable axially on the driver shaft. The first axially movable half sheave member includes a belt engaging flange formed integrally with an axially movable piston member mounted for rotation with the driver shaft and movable axially in response to hydraulic pressure.

  • Patent number: 7251937
Abstract: A charge air cooler drain system is provided for an engine system having a turbo-compressor and a charge air cooler for cooling air compressed by the turbo-compressor. The drain system includes a reservoir for storing condensation and having a reservoir inlet and a reservoir outlet A check valve is connected between the reservoir inlet and a condensation outlet of the charge air cooler. The check valve is biased to a closed position by a first spring. The drain system also includes a pilot operated valve connected between the reservoir outlet and atmosphere. The pilot operated valve is biased to an open position by a second spring, and has a pilot inlet exposed to pressure in the charge air cooler. The pilot operated valve closes when pressure in the charge air cooler exceeds a threshold pressure. The first and second springs are chosen so that the check valve is closed when the pilot operated valve is open and the pilot operated valve is closed when check valve is open.

  • Patent number: 7165514
Abstract: A variable fan drive for a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine is provided. A drive side assembly utilizes a hydraulic actuator to actuate a variable sheave assembly. The variable sheave assembly drives a sheave assembly of a driven side assembly by way of a v-belt. The hydraulic actuator has a piston coupled to the variable sheave assembly. The piston is hydraulically translated by pressurized engine oil from the internal combustion engine. An electronically controlled solenoid valve controlled by an engine or vehicle controller selectively controls the flow of engine oil for piston actuation. Thus the speed of the fan can be controlled based on various engine or vehicle operating parameters.
