  • Patent number: 12208449
Abstract: This disclosure, and the exemplary embodiments provided herein, include AM processed Ti-MMCs reinforced with either aluminum oxide or tantalum pentoxide. According to an exemplary embodiment, composite feedstock powders of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) with 1% and 3% (by volume) reinforcements of either nano-Al2O3 or Ta2O5 are prepared by high energy ball milling and then 3-D printed using SLM.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 4, 2022
Date of Patent: January 28, 2025
Assignee: The Government of the United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of the Navy
Inventors: Andy Nieto, Andrew James Reinhart, Troy Y Ansell, Walter Smith
  • Publication number: 20230347413
Abstract: This disclosure, and the exemplary embodiments provided herein, disclose carbon nanotubes (CNT) integrated into 316L stainless steel (SS) powder feedstocks and 3D-printed using selective laser melting (SLM). Ball milling is used to disperse CNT clusters homogeneously onto the surface of 316L SS powders with minimal damage to the CNTs. Hardness increased by 35% and wear was reduced by 70% with the addition of 2 vol % CNT, relative to SLM 316L SS. The addition of CNTs increased the water contact angle and retained the desirable corrosion resistance of SLM 316L SS, demonstrating the potential of 3D-printed SS-CNT composites for use in structural marine applications.

  • Publication number: 20230021998
Abstract: This disclosure, and the exemplary embodiments provided herein, include 3D printed titanium composites and methods including 1 vol. % carbon nanotube reinforcements on selective laser melt printed Ti64. The interrelationships with laser energy density, laser power, and laser scan speed are demonstrated and discussed. Utilizing selective laser melting, according to one exemplary embodiment of this disclosure, a >99% dense Ti-CNT composite is disclosed with microhardness of 4.75 GPa—a 30% enhancement over its Ti64 counterpart.

  • Publication number: 20210222626
Abstract: A thermal barrier coating (TBC) material includes calcic-magnesia-alumina-silicates-resistant rare-earth (RE) oxide powder blended with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). The RE oxide powder may include any of gadolinium oxide, samarium oxide, ytterbium oxide and cerium oxide. The RE oxide powder may include gadolinium zirconate (GZO).
