Patent number: 8104939Abstract: A solid-state light source (10) comprising a plurality of LED units (12) arrayed to emit light generally about an axis (14). Each of the LED units (12) can comprise a number of LEDs, for example, up to five. They may all emit in a single color or multiple colors can be combined for a specific effect. A light transmissive light guide (16) is associated with the LED units (12) and has a plurality of input widows (18). Each LED unit (12) faces a respective input window (18) and each window (18) transversely intercepts the axis (14) and receives light from the LED units (12). The input windows (18) lead to a common output window (20) that is axially aligned with the input windows (18). The light guide (16) has smooth sidewalls (22) that extend between the input windows (18) and the output window (20).Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 2006Date of Patent: January 31, 2012Assignee: OSRAM SYLVANIA Inc.Inventors: Charles M. Coushaine, Angela Hohl-Abichedid, Ralph Johnson, William E. Meyer, Thomas Reiners, Thomas Tessnow, Michael Tucker, Ralf Vollmer

Patent number: 7982403Abstract: A motor vehicle headlight module having at least two lighting units (1) is specified. Here, each lighting unit (1) comprises at least one light-emitting diode chip (2). Different lighting units (1) are provided here for different lighting functions. Furthermore, the motor vehicle headlight module has a common heat sink (6) for the lighting units, to which heat sink the lighting units are thermally connected, and a common current-stabilizing electronic system (8) for supplying voltage to the lighting units.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2006Date of Patent: July 19, 2011Assignee: OSRAM Gesellschaft mit beschraenkter HaftungInventors: Angela Hohl-AbiChedid, Thomas Reiners, Ralf Vollmer

Publication number: 20100195335Abstract: An optical element is disclosed, for receiving relatively narrow light from a planar light-emitting diode (LED) source, and for redistributing the light into a relatively wide range of output angles that span a full 360 degrees. The element may be used to retrofit existing fixtures that were originally designed for incandescent bulbs with LED-based light sources that have similar emission profiles. The element is small enough so that it may be packaged along with an LED module and its control electronics in the volume envelope of an incandescent light bulb. An exemplary element is a single, transparent, rotationally-symmetric lens that has a batwing shape in cross-section, extending angularly away from a longitudinal axis. The lens also includes a variety of curved, straight, specular and optionally diffuse portions on its longitudinal and transverse faces, all of which cause a variety of internal and external reflections, refractions, and optionally scattering.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 3, 2009Publication date: August 5, 2010Applicant: OSRAM SYLVANIA, INC.Inventors: Steven C. Publication number: 20070258237Abstract: A light source system is arranged about an axis, and includes a planar member having top and bottom surfaces with a central aperture and a plurality of electrical conductors spaced about the central aperture and extending beyond the top and bottom surfaces. A portion of the electrical conductors extending beyond the top surface have electrical insulators. A base having passages to receive the electrical conductors extends beyond the bottom surface and includes a boss on the top surface fitted through the aperture. A body has a first part coaxial with the axis and a second part transverse to the axis. A light source is positioned near an end of the first part. Patent number: 6891870Abstract: An integrated semiconductor device comprising a laser on a substrate, the laser having an active layer and a current-induced grating, such as a current-injection complex-coupled grating, within a laser cavity producing a single-mode output light signal at high data rates (>622 Mb/sec) in isolator-free operation. The grating has a coupling strength product ?L greater than 3, where ? is the coupling coefficient and L is the length of the laser cavity. In certain embodiments, the laser is a distributed feedback (DFB) laser that emits light at a wavelength of about 1.5 ?m. The strong current-induced grating prevents mode hopping between multiple degenerate Bragg modes. The laser is also characterized by excellent immunity from optical feedback, and can be operated without an isolator at high data rates.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 2001Date of Patent: May 10, 2005Assignee: Corning Lasertron, Inc.Inventors: Richard T. Sahara, Angela Hohl-Abichedid, Hanh Lu
