  • Patent number: 5047908
Abstract: A lighting fitting designed to operate either in the spotlight or flood mode has a reflector (7) extending forwardly of the lamp (1) and comprising a plurality of segments (8A, 8B) pivotable about respective axes (12) which are tangential to a circle centred on the longitudinal axis (X) of the reflector (7). Each segment comprises two longitudinally separate sections (8A, 8B) associated with arms (16) for pivoting them simultaneously but through different angles.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4677338
Abstract: In a lamp having at least one seal of solid light-transmitting material, in which is embedded at least one current-supply foil, visible, I.R. and U.V. radiations which would otherwise be internally reflected from the seal surface are dispersed by providing on the seal either a non-uniform surface region or a light-dispersive coating, thus reducing the temperature of the outer ends of the foil and thereby reducing the risk of failure caused by oxidation. The seal may be formed with ribs or sand blasted or it may be provided with a coating of glass containing reflective particles or gas bubbles.

  • Patent number: 4550269
Abstract: In a high pressure electric discharge lamp employing at least one ribbon seal incorporating a strip (3) of refractory metal foil extending through the wall of an envelope (1) of fused silica, and connected at its outer end to at least one external lead rod (5) and at its inner end to a rod (4) which constitutes or provides a support for an electrode of the lamp, with the foil and adjacent ends of the lead rod or rods and the electrode embedded in the envelope wall, wherein a said lead rod and/or an electrode rod is surrounded, over at least a part of the region of the rod which is embedded in the envelope wall, by a closely wound coil (6) of a relatively thin refractory metal wire. This enables the fused silica of the envelope to be pressed tightly around the rod in that region in manufacture while reducing the tendency to crack on cooling.
